I saw your reply to the schools post, and I posted this reply:

Now, granted that was in NJ where the public school system - is terrible.  I don't think I would be where I am today if my parents didn't sacrifice everything to give me and my siblings the best education possible.  Having said that, the public schools here in FL compared to NJ are 10x better.

It's funny that you write this about NJ schools because I feel the exact opposite!  LOL  I feel a bit nervous about public schools in Florida, as opposed to the great schools I attended back in Jersey.

I went to public school in NJ from 4th grade through high school (I did K-3 in Catholic school), and I had a great education.  My 10th grade history class was equivalent to a college-level History class, and it was neither an honors nor an AP class, although there were plenty of those to choose from as well.

My high school was very diverse--it was the first public high school in the nation to integrate voluntarily.  There was a large Jewish population, a large black population, the biggest mosque in the area was in my town, etc.  I am a big believer in diversity, and I want my kids to experience some of that.  I am sad that the schools near me are pretty much 99% hispanic, actually.  I really miss the diversity that I grew up with.

Re: melly&jimmy

  • Yeah -- I totally agree about the diversity.  It's so diverse up north and I really miss that.  When I first moved here it was a huge cultural shock for me and still is to this day (nearly nine years later).  I would LOVE to move back to NJ and send my kids to the same schools I went to , attend the church I went to, play baseball/softball where I played...etc.  but my life is here now.

There are parts of NJ that are really good, I would imagine - I did not live in one of those areas -- we're actually from Jersey City.  I hear the schools system in JC have gotten better since the state took over.  They are running them more like our Magnet schools here.  What part of Jersey are you from?

I'm nervous about public schools here as well - every month it seems kids are bringing weapons to school,  - Coral Gables Senior High for instance - would be the school in my district --- we all heard what happened there.  I think choosing a school for your kids it's tough... I've heard great things about the school in my district - I'm going to give it a try - but I am definitely leaning more towards private -- just have to convince MH aka Mr. CFO.

  • I could have written just what you did about wishing my kids could grow up where I did.  I really miss my parish where I grew up.  I still miss NJ after almost 6 years here.  I grew up in Teaneck, up in Bergen County by the GWB.  I worked in Hoboken right after college, and I had the best view of the skyline everyday on my way to work.  Sigh.  I miss that, too.  I totally understand about leaning towards private school, especially parochial school.  Good luck convincing your CFO :)

  • Thanks Tania - I'm sure I can persuade him :0)

I've never been to Teaneck...How cool is that you worked in Hoboken?!  I was actually born in H and lived there till I was 9 then my parents bought their home in JC.  We could see the WTC from the corner of my mom's house.

Sounds like we're both a little home sick :0(
