My sister-in-law still smokes occasionally (2-3 times per week) although she and my brother started TTC last month. Is this a big deal? I guess it would depend on what you think about pot in general (I think, in moderation, it's a harmless recreational substance like alcohol). Anyway, my brother is asking my advice (if he should insist that she stop while TTC) since I have a kid. What do you think?
Go!
ETA: Just curious, what about alcohol too while TTC?
Re: Is Marijuana a no-no while TTC?
In the nicest way possible ... WTF? and YES it's a big no no.
I love how 2-3 times per week is "occasionally" ... I would say "occasionally" is more like once a month ... lol.
Agree.
If they really want a baby they should stop the pot smoking anyway, are they going to do it when she's pregnant?

LOL!
I don't think you would be asked to do any public service announcements on "say no to drugs!"
Without trying to be too crazed by this post, since you refer to it as "being like alcohol" I would say that like alcohol they give it up while TTC
Does everyone give up alcohol while TTC?
I did because I was charting and it messes with your temps.
I made my husband quit smoking when we starting trying so I wouldn't really continue the pot smoking if it were me.
However my sister in law smoked through her entire accidental pregnancy (we were sure BIL was sterile because of all pot smoking) and still does today and her baby is fine.
I was totally healthy through out my pregnancy and my baby was born with complications. Go figure.
This.
Also, and I the only one that gave the biggest eye roll to all of this? I want a baby, but I LOVE POT!!!!!!
Haha, well I'm not promoting crack while pregnant! I know it happens though.
And I binge drank at an out of town wedding the weekend before I got my BFP. I guess I'm a bad mother...
I'm one who thinks it's always a no-no.
As I heard it, alcohol (and I'm guessing everything else) is a no-no while TTC. If you're just not preventing, it's no big deal really, but if you're actively trying for a baby and KNOW it's in the works, you should try to avoid that stuff.
Now if they're TTC for 6 months or a year or something, you can't really expect that the person will stay 100% sober for a whole year just in case, but at least for a little while they should stop.
My dr said not to worry/panic if you had a few drinks while you were pg but didn't know you were pg--before you found out. But if you KNOW it's going to happen, why would you put your baby in harm's way?
I would say hell yes on the pot. I drank while TTC but avoided it in the 2WW.
Editing to add, that's a hell yes that pot is a no-no.
Although its probably not ideal...it wont cause problems TTC. As for causing male infertility, not true, what it does it is make the sperm slow and sluggish, unlikely to reach their destination before they die.
Get over people. Pot isn't bad.
No you're not the only one.
I was trying to be helpful but to me the answer to this question should be use your common sense....
I don't think anyone is talking about pot use on it's own. If you are TTC, why would you use drugs?
I dont have a problem with people who chose not to smoke it. It just irritates me that people still believe the lies spread about marijuana by the governtment
My reaction too.
"occasionally" is less than once a month to me. Maybe a few times a year.
Oh great. Conspiracy theories. Theres always someone, and I doubt that the "420" in your name is your birthday. Again, its not terrible to smoke, but if you have to ask the question "should I do this when im trying to have a baby" the answer should probably just be no.
I think you need to look at this from a scientific standpoint. Is it bad while TTC? I don't think we really know. Think about it this way, we know you shouldn't take ibuprofen while pg, does that mean you shouldn't use it while TTC too? And if you are actively TTC, let's say on average you'll find out you're pg when you're what, six weeks at the most? So you need to look at how the chemicals that are in your body will react with a very very early developing embryo.
And someone explain to me why it's ok to drink before you know, but not after you know. It's the same alcohol going to the same embryo whether or not you know you're pg. And like I said, nothing passes through the placenta until 6 weeks so drinking while TTC shouldn't be a problem considering that. Just my 2 cents.
Where did you get the info that it is a teratogen?
I give them props for being concerned enough to wonder if she should quit smoking while TTC. I personally feel like if you are trying to conceive that you should also be working on making your body as healthy as possible. DH and I were not actively trying to conceive when I got pregnant, but we also weren't preventing. I knew that there was a possibility that I could get pregnant and because of that I was more cautious about what I did and didn't put into my body.
I don't judge pot smokers because as a musician and living where I live, I know a lot of pot smokers. Many of them are the most intelligent, caring and honest people that I've met. I also would much rather deal with someone who is stoned than someone who is falling down drunk.
Tell your BIL that the best thing for his wife and their potential baby is for them to both stop smoking pot. Maybe it'll stick and they won't smoke once the baby is born. I do believe that once you have a baby that you then have the responsibility of creating a healthy home and life for that child. This means that smoking (any substance), drinking, etc. should be minimized to create a healthy environment for the child.
I would say yes on quitting now. I didn't quit drinking altogether (I did cut back) when I was ttc, but I only ttc one month, so I was thinking I had some time.
Might as well quit before you get pregnant and have the baby. I really hope they don't smoke that a lot after they have the baby. I don't think occasional recreational use is that bad, same goes for drinking, but I don't think you should be doing it all week long.
