  • For a boy? Girl? I have never heard of that name. I would have to vote NO.

  • I think it's kind of a cool, old school name.  I've heard of it because I work with a lot of older men due to my job (investors), so it doesn't seem odd to me.

I'm in the minority here but overall, I'd give it a Yes

  • I hate it for either gender.  Sounds made up, not masculine enough to be a decent boy name and not feminine enough to be a good girl name.
  • I think it is a last name not a first name.
  • Definitely NMS. I'm a history major, and landed gentry is a British social class, not a name.?

  • I kinda like it!  But I wouldn't be able to bring myself to actually use it.

  • I don't think it's terrible. It's a name that would take getting used to.

Isn't there a country band Montgomery Gentry?  I am not totally against country music but I don't want that to be the first thing people think when they hear my kid's name either.

This was my first thought as well.

  • I like it ok.
  • It's a last name. It should only be a last name IMO.

You don't feel that way about Cole obviously, so why not Gentry?

  • I'm not against surnames as first names, I just don't like the way Gentry sounds as a first name. That's my opinion.

I was just curious because your first comment made it seem that it was the surname issue that was a problem. My last name is Cole, so I was just wondering.

Oops, didn't mean for it to sound like I was against surnames!  Just to clarify, I have only heard Gentry as a last name and I personally don't care for it as a first name. Smile

  • I have to agree with some of the others...because of the historical meaning of gentry (upper class) the name could give the impression of trying too hard to seem rich or classy. Don't get me wrong...it is way cooler than naming your child "Princess" or something to that effect, but I think there are other names that might sound cool and classy in a more subtle way.
  • Sounds like the name of a company! NO WAY!
  • As in the landed gentry?

    Yeah, no thanks.

  • imagemj.reilly:

    Sounds kind of pompous, stuck-up.

It means: "people of good social position, specifically (in the UK) the class of people next below the nobility in position and birth : a member of the landed gentry."

upper classes, privileged classes, elite, high society, haut monde, smart set; establishment, aristocracy; informal upper crust, top drawer.

Not something I would name a child.

this exactly was my 1st thought

  • I actually don't think its that bad. I have only heard it once, on a girl in her 30's. It's not as horrible as others are making it out to be. There are FAR worse mentioned on this board.
  • No
