Postpartum Depression

Anyone with bipolar disorder?

Hi ladies. I'm only about 6 weeks with my first pregnancy but I have bipolar disorder so unfortunately I'm already worried about a rough time postpartum.

I was diagnosed with bp six years ago (probably had it my whole life though) and this is the first time I've been off medication, but so far so good.

I'm wondering, where can I find good resources about bipolar disorder and pregnancy? Also, I know postpartum psychosis is rare but the rates are higher among those with bp, so any personal experiences anyone could share would be helpful.

Thanks, and the best of luck and happiness to all of you wonderful women!

  • Hello and first of all congratulations. I am also bi-polar, the first time off my meds. I never thought pregnancy or babies yet the Lord has chosen differently. Personally I am doing ok. My doctors allowed me to make my own choices of whether to medicate or not. They recommended Prozac or Zoloft as they have the most research. And this research extends back over 30 years, so these women who were medicated during pregnancy have healthy babies who develop into healthy adults. I decided to try my pregnancy without meds and see how things go. So far so good. I have good days and bad but even medicated I had those. I do feel myself wanting to be more of a life spectator than actual player. I have been doing alot of inner reflection and honestly I think I can see things more clearly. It's not just about me anymore. I don't know if this helps in anyway but it has helped me not to feel so isolated. Good luck and God Bless you and His new creation.  Paradise
