alternate vax schedule?

For those following an alternate schedule, did you find it on a website, or did you make the schedule up with your pedi, or some other way?

Re: alternate vax schedule?

  • We used the one in Dr. Sears book and then modified it based on our needs.  I discussed it with my pedi and she was very impressed at how thorough our research was.  Usually they require parents considering an alternate schedule to attend a class but after talking, she said we did not need to.  The vaccine book by Sears is great.  He has a few schedules in there.  I just wanted to space the shots out so DD did not get 5 doses at a time and I wanted to delay the STD shots till much later (Hep B and Gardisil (which I am still up in the air on)).

  • we did 2 shots every month instead of 4 shots every 2 months, our pedi also has Dr Sears schedule and they go by it for many of their patients. even doing the alt schedule, DD was caught up by 12mo old.

she did get 3 shots at once one time and it was the only time she ever had a fever afterwards.

if you are nursing, nursing the baby right after a shot will really calm her down and make the whole experience so much easier

We did something like this too. Although i think we did more than 2 shots in a month, I never did more than 2 shots at a visit, and for a while we went to the pediatrician every 2-3 weeks, because for the first round of shots he got one at a time. if i remember correctly, the shots they get at 2 months are all repeated at 4 months, so once we saw he wasn't having reactions to any of the 2 month vaccines, we moved from doing one at a time to 2 at a time. I did read the dr. sears book, and tried referring to the chart in there that lists the ingredients for each vaccine when deciding which ones he should get at each visit. my pediatrician was very flexible, and helped me figure out as he got older what the best schedule would be for us. now we are almost on track with the cdc recommendations, and he has not ever had a reaction to any vaccine (not even the one time he got 3 shots). i don't see the harm in spreading out the vaccination schedule...I mean, what infant has to worry about hepatitis b? very few! and i know not every child is like this, but my baby really does well with the shots. he cries for a few seconds, then is very easily distracted, and is usually his happy self by the time i've got him dressed.

  • We were considering the alt. schedule and were just going to use the Dr. Sears schedule.
