Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Those who gave birth before 39 weeks....

I went to my doctor's appointment yesterday and advised the doctor that I feel like the baby has begun to drop and have been feeling some pressure down there...he very nonchalantly said that if I were to go into labor from this point on they would not stop it...this response really surprised me and caught me off guard. For those of you who had your LO's prior to 38-39 weeks....Did your baby come home from the hospital with you? I'm so nervous about having to leave little one behind (hospital is about 45 minutes away)

Re: Those who gave birth before 39 weeks....

  • They generally won't stop labor after 34 or 35 weeks.  Technically 37 weeks is term though.  If you give birth prior to 37 weeks, your baby may need some NICU time for immature lungs, etc.

I would think as long as you deliver after 37 weeks, your baby should be able to come home with you no problem.  Every situation is different though.

FYI, I had extreme pelvic pressure from about 33 weeks on and delivered at 38w3d and my DD was 6lb11oz and came home with me.

I was induced at 37w 6d. DD is perfectly healthy.

  • I went into PTL at 34 weeks & they stopped it w/meds until 36 weeks because I had a boy. Boys have a harder time being preemies than girls.

If you have a girl, she would most likely go home with you, depending on her lung development/jaundice.

If you have a boy prior to 38 weeks, there is a much higher chance he'd have to stay for a bit. Boys lungs develop later.

I had DS at 38 weeks exactly and he was perfect! :)

My advice to you would be to TAKE IT EASY! You do not want a pre-term baby. Every hour, day, week gives your LO so much more!!! Don't walk too much or stay on your feet too much. Take naps, drink LOTS of water, and rest!!

  • I delivered DS at 37w5d and he came home from the hospital with us.  We did have to stay an extra day because he was under the bili-light for his jaundice but that wasn't anything major.

  • I was also induced at 37w6d (DS was born at 38 weeks exactly).  He was 6 lbs, 11 oz and perfect.  He came home with me.
  • I was induced at 37 weeks due to my blood pressure, and DD came home with me 2 days later.
  • I thought I should add that if you have your baby now, even if he/she had to stay in the nicu for a few days, the chances of them being healthy are GREAT!!! :)

  • Thank you all....I was born at 30 weeks and didn't come home until my mom's due date....my brother was born at 35 weeks and didn't come home for almost 2 weeks...I really don't think genetics has anything to do with it but I am a natural worry wart...
  • I had insane pelvic pressure from around 31 weeks on. My baby was super low and both my doctor and I (and an RN who checked me in L&D) swore I'd never make it to 37 weeks. I ended up being induced at 39w,5d. Your baby may still stay in there a good while. Pelvic pressure doesn't necessarily mean labor is imminent.
  • I had DS at 36 weeks and he came home with me. Everything was fine.

  • I had DS at 37w 3d. The birth center I had intended on delivering at only required that you be 37w since that's full term. I ended up being transferred to the hospital due to blood pressure issues, but that was unrelated. DS was 7lbs 3oz and perfectly healthy. The only issue he had was that his initial evaluation estimated his gestational age to be only 36.5 weeks. This meant he had to have a test to make sure he could breathe ok in a carseat. He passed without any trouble and came home with me after 2 nights.

  • I went into labor with LO at 37wks exactly which was Monday, February 1st.  On Wednesday February 3, I went in for a c-section after 30 hours of labor which would not progress.  That Friday, I was discharged from the hospital with my LO and he came home with us =)

I was freaking out when they told me that they weren't discharging me after I went in on Monday (I was bleeding due to a placental abruption) because I was having contractions.  He didn't need to be in NICU and was brought to me in the postpartum room after he was cleaned up and weighed, which his father stayed with him throughout .

  • I had Avery at 38w 2d and he was 6lbs 10 oz, but because of jaundice issues he didn't get to come home for two days after I got released. But my doctor had told me at 32 weeks that he didn't think I would make it until 36 weeks since I was 2 cm dilated and 75% effaced..but you never know.
  • I had Claire two weeks early and she came home with me. In fact they asked if I wanted to go home early.
  • I went into PTL at 29 weeks. They stopped my labor up to 34 weeks. After that I was on my own if it was go time. I continued taking medication until my doc told me to go to the hospital at 35 weeks because I had reached 6cm. DD spent 8 days in the NICU.?
