Hanging Letters

OMG! They are expensive! I decorated plain wooden letters for my DD 5 years ago and I don't remember paying $10.00 a letter!

I've been looking online this morning looking for ideas on how to decorate them and I've come across sites that sell just the plain unpainted letters and I can't get over how expensive they are.

Anyway, has anyone done this and if so where did you get your letters?

I love the hanging from ribbon look, but don't want to pay the extra $5 a letter just for the ribbon that is already attached. Has anyone purchased just the letter then added the ribbon? If so, how did that work out?

TIA!!!!

Re: Hanging Letters

  • I'm not sure what size you need, but a few months ago I went to Michael's with a co-worker and she bought some letters for her 1 year olds room and they were like $1.50 a piece unfinished.

  • Um, 10$ a letter!? You have to be kidding me! I found some at Michaels and Hobby Lobby for 3$ a letter!

I'm personally doing my own letters. I'm buying wooden ones from Michael's and some ribbon, painting and hanging..

  • I paid $1.19 at Michael's the other day for unfinished letters. They are about 5inches tall if I remember, only a few centimeters thick and a few inches wide.  I haven't painted or hung them yet but I was planning to attempt ribbon with a staple gun (my friend has one).  So I will do her whole name for about $12 with decorations. If you want huge heavy letters you might need to look elswhere but the letters at Michael's were really pretty. Oh! I think they did have bigger, straigher letters for $2 a piece, but I liked the font of the smaller ones.

  • Whew, that's good news! I haven't looked at Michael's yet. Thank you ladies!!!
  • I made the hanging letters myself for DD.  You can get the unfinished letters at Micheals for $1 - $3 depending what size you want.  I just painted and then used a hot glue gun to attach the ribbon.
  • I got mine this past weekend at Hobby Lobby for $.99 a letter.
  • LOL the letters I have my eye on are 23 bucks a letter! We don't have a name yet, but the joke is, we should really pick a short name!

Ditto this. This is how DD#1's letters turned out

  • If I were you I would go with what everyone else is saying. Go to a craft store and buy unfinished letters and paint them yourself. You will save a ton of money and can match / coordinate the colors perfectly with the room.

A hot glue gun or small screw in eye hooks will work to hang the ribbons and they will both hold up well.

If you are worried that the ribbon isn't secured well enough or don't want the letters sliding around (or want them to be perfectly placed), you can also buy picture frame hangers to attach them to the wall and just measure the ribbon to suit.

  • Ditto, go w/ Michaels.  When I did DD's I bought unfinished ones for $1 that were a few inches high and painted/hotglued, but I saw the other day they had BIG ones already painted (some had sparkle paint) and they were only like $2 each.  Plus, they always have coupons in their flyers at the front for like 40% off...

  • I wanted the curlz font, and I orderd mine on ebay for much less than I could find elsewhere.
