Can someone 'splain to me

why it's horrible to let your child walk around safely and happily on a leash in a crowded area like Disney, but it's ok to strap them down into a stroller, even if they are screaming and throwing a fit?  I mean, a stroller is a "control device" just as much as a leash is when they are a toddler.

People's solutions to not using a leash are "use a stroller" or "hold their hand".  I'll ignore the hand-holding "solution" because a) I refuse to walk hunched over for hours at a time and b) my child has slimy, sweaty hands (I swear she can do it on cue) and slips out of my hand constantly.

So, why is it ok to strap them in a stroller against their will, but giving them a little bit of freedom and making everyone happy is so horrible?

  • Just the name of it turns me off. I reserve the use of "leashes" for animals. I also feel like it's degrading. But, to each their own. That's just my opinion.

LMAO. Don't you love the amazing abilities of toddlers?! If only we could all harness that power.

  • Because they don't look like animals that way. Strollers are for babies, leashes are for pets.  It's all about appearances you know.

Looking and sounding miserable > looking like a pet

  • I haven't been on all day to respond to any of this, but I do agree with you.

DS refuses to hold my hand and he constantly runs off if I let him walk on his own.  That's exactly why I use a stroller.  But for places like Disney World where you can't expect a toddler to sit in a stroller all day long, I'd have to agree.

That being said, I'd never take DS to Disney World as a toddler.  I'd go crazy.

  • I must have missed the post that sparked this one. I'll have to go searching.

ETA: Yowza...correction, I missed the million posts about this.

  • I think strollers are okay (even though there are strollers for pets, as well) is because they are more socially acceptable to people with no kids and to those who have kids but can not fathom that someone else may not want to always strap their child down in a stroller or strongly grip their child's hand in public.

We're going in May.  When I'll be 31 weeks pregnant.

I've never used a leash and don't own one, but I will be buying one just in case my toddler decides to go nuts.

It's definitely not a bad idea!!  I honestly may be going in October for a work conference and DH really wants to come with me and bring the kids.  I told him he can come without the kids, lol.  We shall see.  Have fun!

Then call it a "safety harness.". The end.

  • I used one for my daughter that looked like a monkey. She loved it!

Anyone who says that they will never use one has obviously never felt the intense panicked horrifying fear that happens whenever your child runs out of your sight in a crowded place -even for a split second.

This! I always said when I take my children to Disney, there would be NO diapers and NO strollers!

    This is my thinking...

Some people (with kids or without) can't imagine doing something that isn't "social acceptable" in their area or from their background. I'm gonna do what I feel is right for my kid, if that means putting him on a leash in a crowded area, so be it. I couldn't care less what people think about it.

  • I just got back from DW today a 3 day vacay with our 2yr old.  He absolutely loved it.  I was petrified of attempting this with him being so young.  He had no meltdowns and stayed in his stroller majority of the time.  Yes we have a "leash" for him and so do a majority of people in DW with toddlers.  He had no problems with the stroller, leash or holding our hands when he needed to.  No regrets we are going back again in 4 weeks my husband has a business trip in Orlando.

Maybe it's degrading to strap a 2 year old bursting with energy into a stroller for hours on end and deprive them of exercise, exploration, and gross motor skill practice. Eta: this wouldn't have occured to me prior to parenthood. Now I see every ounce of energy he expends as a defense against tantrums and sleep problems. Worn out toddler = happy toddler. Hmm, that is actually true for my dogs, too.
