Breastfeeding

For those who also bottlefeed EBM....

How many oz did your little one eat at 12 weeks?  How often?  I'm asking because my LO is going to MIL's house 2 days a week from approx 8 am to 4:30 pm.  Right now I send three 5 oz bottles, but we are wondering if he is ready for more.  She says he really sucks down the 5 oz bottles pretty quick.  My husband also gives the occassional bottle to LO and he thinks 5 oz is still a good amount for him.

Also, when did you switch to a higher flow nipple?  LO is still using the slow flow nipple (Avent brand) at 12 weeks.  How do I know when he's ready to move up?  He does pretty good switching between breast and bottle so I hate to mess with a good thing...

Thanks!

  • While my DD is not on EBM (we have to supplement) I always try to read her cues after a bottle.  My kid has no "off" button...she just sucks down whatever is in her bottle. If she fusses afterwards I burp her and try to wait about 3-4 minutes.  If she's still fussy I give her another ounce.  If your LO is taking the bottle but isn't fussy afterwards I would think it's probably enough.  Bottles are a lot easier than nursing so they take them much faster and don't realize if they're full right away.  HTH.

  • We have never moved up past slow flow and never will. My LC and a lot of research I've read suggest always keeping breastfed babies on slow flow nipples.

My guess is that he doesn't need bigger bottles. My DS never took more than 5oz at a time. He might do better taking smaller bottles more frequently. Instead of taking his 15 ounces in three bottles, maybe 4 bottles with 4, 4, 4, and 3 ounces.

This info helped me a lot:

Keeping him more upright and switching sides during a bottle also helped my DH regulate how much DS was taking in a feeding. If they chug a bottle very quickly they don't have time to realize they're getting full. A bottle should take at least as long as a nursing session.

    Good luck!

    Hoovereeno, you have a PM!

  • I don't plan on switching nipples for a long time - she gets annoyed at the nursing pace if she has too many bottles, and she is using a Preemie nipple now (Dr. Brown's).  I'm actually worried about even using the wide bottles we have because they only fit Level 1, not Preemie.

And we actually give her bottles in increments of 2 ounces because otherwise she spits it all up.  So 2 ounces, burp, then we add another two ounces, etc.  Sometimes if that is her whole meal (we are out or the nanny is here), we'll start with 4, but she is a snacker, so I'd like to mimic her nursing patterns.

  • if DD is drinking EBM, she'll get 5oz at a time. she's been this way since about 4 months. as for the nipple, we had to switch to a medium flow nipple at 12 weeks, when i returned to work. she was refusing the bottle before then for a couple of weeks. once we switched the nipple, she was happily taking the bottle again. if your LO shows signs that the slow flow is too slow for them (like refusing the bottle) then it would be time to switch.

  • I am working a part-time schedule right now and so I'm gone from her for about 6 hrs each day and she takes 2-3 3oz bottles.  I don't plan to change nipples either for the reasons mentioned above.
  • Lanie is still eating every 2 hours with a bottle and BFing. She only takes 4oz oz at a time and won't go higher. So I send 4 4oz bottles.
