lurking over here for a minute, but wanted to say i broke my DD1 from hers right around her 1st b-day, first off i just found i was pregnant and wanted to get rid of her paci, plus she only ised it to sleep and i thought it was time to get rid of it, she was getting a rash on her face from slober and the sucking.
Agreed! We are talking about taking it away at 6 months. Their need is to suck in the first little bit of life. I think once that is done (between 6 months and a year) there are other ways that they can find that stimulation/comfort. Beyond that age is just plain habit.

If they are attempting to talk to me with the paci in their mouth, that's too old. Doesn't matter if the word is as simple as Mama or as complex as "Can I have some milk." Talking = no paci.
I saw a friend from high school at the mall the other day and her daughter who was 3 still had a pacifier. Thats too old IMO. I'd like to break DS by 1 year old. I'm already dreading it.
I plan to stop around 6 months. But I'm sure he'll have figured out how to suck on his thumb by then anyway. He's been desperately trying for a few weeks now!
My daughter is 2 1/2, and still uses the pacifier at night. The only reason we haven't ended that yet is, frankly, because we are exhausted and don't want to deal with the agony of it yet.
When we weaned her from using it during naps, she stopped napping. Completely.
My nephew used a paci until he was well past 3. This was because my sister wasn't around to do anything about it and his dad was a lazy no-good father and couldn't have cared less. He is 9 now and still talks like a baby, lisp and all. He needs speech therapy, but please refer back to the lazy no-good father who doesn't care - he isn't getting any.
DS#1 was a HUGE fan of the paci. Around 15 months he was only allowed to use it for bedtime and naps. I plan to get him off it completely by 2.. which is soon... but I think he will not even miss it. He sleeps with a stuffed dog that is quickly replacing the paci as a soother.
I wish my 2 yr old used a paci instead of his thumb....I could take it away then. <sigh> For those who mentioned walking. I have had early walkers, that age can range quite a bit, do you mean like 9 months or 15 months or doesn't matter?
Re: What's an inappropriate age for pacifiers?
I agree that walking age is too old

Too old!
I can't wait until you are all to the point of trying to break that!
They are also too old to be carried!!
I already did... 3 months was my limit.

Watch as I eat my words a year from now.
