pumping increasing milk supply?

Has anyone ever had success with this? I know the baby is best to increase production but I don't think I'm producing enough and want to see if I can increase even more.

She's cluster feeding right now and always seems hungry and gets upset when I run out, like she's starving. I feel like I need to do something.

Re: pumping increasing milk supply?

  • Cluster feeding is totally normal at that age; she is probably in the 3-week growth spurt.  The best and fastest way to increase supply is to let her nurse as much as possible, even if she's not getting anything.  This is the signal to your body to produce more, and it's more effective than the pump.

I remember what a PITA cluster feeding was with dd #1 but #2 falls asleep on the breast a lot and when I wake her she falls back asleep after a min or two. That's why I thought that pumping might help with my supply because I'm concerned she's not triggering enough of a production increase. And it's hard not to supplement when she's crying for food on the breast when she gets upset when I run out.

  • Totally normal to feel this way at 3 weeks old. Yes pumping absolutely can increase supply. Pump after feeding even if no milk comes. It will increase supply but so will you baby naturally too as you baby needs more.
  • My lactation consultant recommended pumping to get my milk to increase.  My son was not latching on at first and at 3 weeks he began latching properly.  But, it still takes him time to get the proper latch because I have flat nipples so if he is starving, he will not stay calm enough to take the time to latch.

The LC also recommended putting him on the breast for snacks in between feedings to stimulate let down and to help him practice getting the proper latch quickly.

  • Pumping will increase your supply. I used it when I felt like I wasn't producing enough.
