We started a bit earlier--around 4 months because DD#1 would never take a bottle (I was at home with her and BF, so it wasn't a big deal). She wasn't very efficient with it at first, but I think exposing kids to things like that earlier than you intend for them to use them can make it easier once you're trying to make a transition.
we 'introduced' it at 6 months but she just really started using it this week. For some reason, she will only drink from the green and pink sippy cup- not any of the others :-)

i introduced at 4 months. i had one of those nuby ones that is almost bottle like and my husband was in bed hurt after an accident so it was me an little one and i was bored. i gave it to him and he was a rockstar with it. he didn't really take to it for a few months, but i knew i had time and could keep working with him. made the transition super easy.
at 1st we only did water - once they start solids they need water to keep the BMs regular. Just give it to the baby and see what happens. When we did the straw cup, I drank out of mine and DD just copied me.
We had no probs just taking away the bottles one day, by that point she was getting breast milk and water in straw cups and did not cry for the bottle. Some babies are really attached to bottles however and it's a whole weaning process.
I would not worry about putting milk/formula in a cup until you are getting ready to stop the bottles altogether.
wow, you guys were early!! we tried to introduce it around 6 months, but he wanted nothing to do with it. after a couple weeks of him throwing it on the floor the second we handed it to him, we gave up. however, we reintroduced it a couple weeks ago and now he's totally on board. he drinks everything except his night time bottle out of a sippy. I'm trying to get him to use a straw cup, but he just doesn't get that yet.
Good to know... guess I should be transitioning DS to a sippy soon. Any ideas how to go about this?
We introduced the Nuby sippy since it is so similar to a bottle. At first I held it up so they could drink out of it to show them that it is like a bottle. I would take a cup and drink and the baby will attempt to mimick you. Just keep at it, it will take a little while for them to get used to it.

Supposedly you introduce it around 6 months and by 1 year they should be experts at it. Neither of my kids were champs with it by 1 year. DD #2 is still working on it. I guess I'm not too worried about it. DD #1 got it eventually when she was around 1 year old, and I guess #2 will too.
Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
We're starting this weekend since pedi said to go ahead. Last night I had a small bottle with a few ounces of water in it on his high chair tray and he actually picked it up and was able to get the nipple in his mouth on his own, so I guess he is ready.
