PETS! Keeping them out of the crib/bassinet.

Does anyone have any advice for keeping a cat out of the bassinet? The crib problem is solved, since it is in the baby's bedroom and we have kept the door shut. However, the bassinet is in our room and I have caught the cat a few times sleeping in it! I can't keep my bedroom door closed because the litter box is in the bathroom in my bedroom. There is no other place for the litter box b/c we live in a condo. Whenever I catch him in there I just take him out and he goes on his way, but I'm just concerned he might jump in when the baby is in there. Has anyone had a similar problem? Thanks!

  • Get a squirt bottle and when you find him in there, give him a squirt.

It worked for training our cats not to be on any furniture we didn't want them on.

  • SImilar problem, but with a 4 & 2 yo climbing in there to play.  What about putting it in the baby room for now?
  • I hear if you lay strips of duct tape sticky side up on the mattress it'll stick to the cats feet next time they jump in and scare them out and they probably won't jump in again. It's worth a shot!

  • For now, I lined them with tin foil (they supposedly hate that but I've seen kitty footprints in the foil!) When LO gets here, I guess I'll just drape them with blankets when they're not in use. ?!? Not sure.

  • My friend used blown up balloons. Before the baby is in there of course!  I need to get some too, because I've caught my kitty in there and now have to wash everything again.
  • I'm not sure about how to protect the bassinet but there are screens you can put over the crib. I know some people say to just keep the door close but cats are sneaky and that can be hard to do. I have heard that cats love to snuggle with the warmth of the baby and tend want to lay right on their faces which is, of course, very dangerous.
  • tin foil! cats hate the sound it makes so one jump and they will associate the sound with the basinet and hopefully stay out of it! I've caught my cats in different things (crib, PnP, basinet) but none seem to be a common place repeatedly so I think once the baby is here they will be scared sh&tless of it and stay away! well I hope

While I know that all cats are different, rest assured that neither of our 2 cats ever tried this with DD.

It's true that they love warmth.  However, they dislike new noises and sudden movements.  Hence why they would sniff curiously while keeping a healthy distance.

OP, we used tin foil in both the crib and bassinet before DD was born.  Worked like a charm.  After a couple of trips into both, the cats left them alone.  They stayed out of them after she came home, too (has to do more with the new noises & sudden movement thing).  Only recenty has one of the cats started sleeping on her bed when she's not in it, and that's because of the fleece blanket that's on it.

  • I have been using a squirt bottle and a smack on the butt with a stern "NO" and placing them outside of the room and it seems to be working. I can't shut the door because LO is sleeping in our room. They don't get in the crib anymore because I have it kinda packed with stuff so there's no bare spot for them to curl up and sleep.

  • One of my girlfriends tried every suggestion listed in this thread. While they worked to keep the cats off the baby's stuff, as soon as the trick was removed they were back in it. If you're worried about the cat getting in there while the baby is in the bassinet I'd find a new place for the litter and keep the door closed.
