Need diaper help (maybe TMI)

Hi, I have been lurking for while, but really need some advice. My almost 4 month old daughter has explosive poops. Lately it has been going up the back almost every time. We don't have any problems with it coming out the legs, just up the back. We use Pampers swaddlers. I have seen that some Huggies diapers have a "pocket" at the top of the back, which is supposed to catch this mess. Does anyone know if it works? Or does anyone have any recommendations for diapers that contain these kinds of messes? I know it's not an absorbency problem because the diaper will be completely dry and she will poop and it still goes up the back

Re: Need diaper help (maybe TMI)

  • I would try going up a size in diaper- or switch from the swaddlers to the cruisers.

    this.

usually, when we had successive blow outs, that was an indication that we needed a larger size, which always solved the problem. pay no attention to the pound recommendations...blowouts are what we used to determine size change.

if that doesn't help, try experimenting with different sizes. my BIL's kids all blew out of pampers - no matter the size, but the target brands were perfect. i guess it's just the style/shape of the diaper. we alternated between pampers and target without issue (except when it was time to move up a size).

  • We just went up a size a week or two ago. It helped for a few days, but now we have the problem again. I'm thinking either we don't get it tight enough around her waist or it's the shape of the diaper. So Target brand is decent?

Another ditto.  We switched from size 1 to 2 a few weeks ago and it solved the problem (except while the daycare ladies insisted on using up the size 1s they had and DD had blowouts daily).

  • We use Pampers exclusively so I have nothing to compare them to, but I was going to say the same thing about going up a size.  Sounds like you did that... maybe you have to go up two sizes?
Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.

we really liked them. we used pampers when we'd run out of target brand and they didn't have any of our size in stock. or when we went out of town and had to buy diapers in a small package.

huge cost difference too. our son had a few diaper rashes (like, maybe 3 or 4) and none of them would i attribute to the diaper.

  • I used swaddlers when DD was really little but once she got bigger we switched to Costco brand.  Huggies makes them, they are identical to Huggies (the graphics while different are even in the same spaces) and I think the little elastic at the top may help.  What I like about Costco is that it is always a good deal.  I hated shopping diaper sales because they would never have the ones I wanted in the size I needed at the time.

We liked the Huggies Snug and Dry for this problem... we found the other Huggies would be too big on the legs, and then we just had the problem of the poop coming out the legs.  I have some Huggies (Snug and Dry) size 1s left if you want to try them - I can try to meet you somewhere to get them if you want.

  • Thanks for the offer but she is already in size 2 diapers.
  • We had up the back explosions with our disposables too.  Never had one in cloth diapers.  You could try some Bum Genius One Size diapers, those are a good one to start with!  Good luck!
  • I agree that you may need to try a bigger size.  We had the same problem with DS and I finally realized the the weight ranges on the sizes overlap.  So while I thought we had plenty of room for DS in the size 3, he was at the minimum weight for the size 4.  Once we switched things were not staying put.
  • I don't think you can completely get rid of blowouts. DD's sometimes would go all the way up into her hair - yuck! We didn't like Pampers much, personally. Try Huggies
