NBR: anyone have a cleaning service?

Technically I'd argue this is baby-related....mommy-hood is the reason I don't have time to clean.

Anyone have a cleaning service?  I just got a ballpark quote for bi-weekly cleaning and it sounds like it's pretty thorough.  I mean, she said they dust and do the baseboards....I don't normally go near baseboards.  They won't give me an actual quote until they see the house but they estimated $120 for bi-weekly.  Is that about right?  Or maybe it varies too by region and of course the size of the house.

I haven't told DH yet that I want to pursue this...I'm not sure what he'll say.  I feel like I am spoiling myself by doing this but I know it's something I need to do.

  • Yes! We got a cleaning lady before I went back to work...greatest thing ever!!! We got a quote from a place like Merry Maids and that is about what it was. Our lady charges 70 for the downstairs and adds 20 for the upstairs since we dont use it much. House is 3000 sq ft if that helps. She does everything!! Even washes the dishes in the sinks and dusts things I would never think of. It is great!

  • We have a lady that comes every other week.  She does not do our laundry, but she does all the actual cleaning stuff.  She charges $15/hr.  She is usually here for 4 hours so it is really inexpensive.  But we do "maintenance" on a daily basis- cleaning up countertops, putting stuff away, etc.  DH is a little OCD about this kind of stuff.

She is independent though, not from a "service" so I am not sure what those places charge around here.

  • Man, this is something I need to look into if it's only 120 bi-weekly. It would so be worth every cent for someone else to mop my humongous kitchen floor that I detest to clean! Oh, and the bathrooms and dusting... blech.
  • prices in So Cal are $70 a cleaning and that's for a 3,400 sq foot house. Bi-weekly sounds like a great plan!

  • That sounds like a good price!  DH's aunt cleans houses independently and charges us $10 an hour, which I think is kind-of her cutting us a break.  I think if she didn't know us and was cleaning our house, she'd charge us $15.  Our house is 1600 sq. ft. and she cleans it into submission - usually takes about 8 hours!

ETA:  She does not come regularly, maybe 3 times a year.  I don't want everyone thinking my house is so dirty that she cleans it for 8 hours every other week or something!

  • Yes. Best thing I've ever done. I still clean often, vacuum 1-2x per week, dust weekly, scrub countertops twice a week etc. but our lady comes every other week.  We used to pay $120 each time (with a different woman), but now we only pay $70 and the cleaning is much better. Oh, and it's a 3800 sq ft house.

  • That sounds like a good price. I looked into this before we dedcided I would stay home. I firmly believe if you're a working momma you should hve a cleaning person. No reason cleaning should take time away from your time with LO and you're family!
  • DO IT!  it's awesome.

Ours charges $60 and we have a 3 bedroom 2 bath one story.  They are pretty thorough.  It's not a service though, just someone my neighbor referred to me.  If you haven't already I would ask around to your neighbors.

I think they charged $80 the first time they came for a "deep clean"

They do pretty much everything, and if there's something extra I need, like ceiling fans dusted or something, I just tell them and they do it with no extra charge.  We have ours come once a month and we both just try to keep up with the kitchen and bathrooms in between.  It's a life saver!  We hired her when I was in third tri b/c we have a lot of tile and I just couldn't mop anymore.  It was KILLING me and DH tried to help but you know how that goes.  He has the yard to worry about - lol

Anyway I recommend it, even if you can only do once a month it is a lifesaver!!!

  • We had hired someone before Cora's baptism and it was great. It was $55 for 1500sq ft. DH and I have tried to keep the house clean and even pick a night to clean a few rooms but it never works. I think we are going to end up hiring someone.
