3rd Trimester

Childbirth and newborn care class

I totally could have done without both of those. DH and i just sat there texting each other back and forth. I felt like we were in school passing notes. It was so boring! I felt like it was completely useless. I was sending snarky responses to Dh for the stupid ass questions these people were asking! Thank Bump for turning me into a biotch! :)

  • EXACTLY why I'm not taking them!

  • I'm sorry but IMO, that's pretty disrespectful to the person teaching the class.  I hate cellphones for just this reason.  Just sayin...

  • I THOUGHT that they might teach me something I havent read on here...but DH said even he was bored. They had a pediatrician there talking and as soon as we walked in i cracked up.....the pedi was one of my old customers and a freaking lunatic...I was like omg i cant believe this woman is a dr. wow. the class just went downhill from there.

  • Are classes were canceled last minute and the only classes avaialble were the online birthing class. It cost us a $100.

Waste of time! We tried to do the class last night and I felt like I was being punished. We took so many freaking breaks and time outs. LOLOL. Tomorrow night we are going to do the last 3 chapters but I can say I learned nothing.

  • I decided not to take them for this very reason!
  • Did anyone else have the same to dads asking stupid ass questions? It was soo annoying. I wanted to bang my head against the wall.

  • This is why I hate teaching adults more than teaching HS kids. At least most HS kids know better than to text during class. Adults on the other hand...

But our childcare class was pointless as well. They taught us how to diaper and bath a child. I was shocked at how clueless many were.

Our childbirth class, however, was better. Yes, we knew almost everything, but it was worth it to learn how our hospital does things.

  • I paid 100 bucks for two classes that were useless.. IMO I can text thru the whole thing if I wanted to.

  • Have to say I agree with pp about texting during the class, very rude/childish (IMO).

Sorry you felt your classes were a waste of time.  We're doing ours this month & so far have found them to be very helpful.  Granted, a lot of it we already knew but it's nice to hear it coming from a very experienced L&D nurse & to learn some other things.  We've even had questions answered in the class that people on here weren't able to answer for other posters.  We still have 2 more classes & we're looking forward to them both.

Agree with this poster. Maybe it's because I'm a teacher myself, but if you're not going to learn anything and just sit there and text, why don't you just take your a$$ and walk out the door and go do something that is (1) not distracting to the rest of the class and (2) not disrespectful to the person teaching the course?

  • we felt the same about our class... we didn't text, but DH did write notes the whole time (which for all the instructor knows could have been legit)... we did find ourselves laughing inappropriately a few times (not at other's questions- those were just baffling), but when the instructor said "it's all downhill once that head comes out", neither of us could hold it in.  heheh.  we dropped out after the first week and told our OB that we found it useless (who is on the board of directors and very interested in our input).

We were not distracting to the rest of the class. Cell phones were on silent. No different then writing a note. I am friends with nurse teaching the class and know for a fact that we were not a problem. I think it would have been totally disrespectful to walk out the door..that would have been a distraction...not my DH and I texting. I went with the intentions of learning something. Thats why we signed up for the class...but the point I was trying to make with this post was that most of the stuff they taught (in at least my class) was completely stuff that they are going to tell you in the hospital, or stuff that is kinda basic knowledge.

Sorry to offend all the teachers on here...I know texting in class is a pet peeve of most teachers.

  • It amazes me how elitist some people can be on here.  Who cares if people in the class were asking "stupid ass" questions?  Is it your place to judge someone because they don't know absolutely EVERYTHING about taking care of a baby?  At least they were at the class, actually trying to learn, instead of just winging it.

And the texting?  Come on.  I don't care if you feel like you weren't a disturbance, it's still rude.

  • I will agree that some of the stuff in ours was basic knowledge but not all of it. I personally wouldn't discourage anyone from taking a birthing class or a baby care class because there are a lot of folks who think they "know it all" and you quickly realize they frankly don't know crap.

As for the texting, yes it was rude and just because your friend the nurse told you you weren't being a distraction doesnt mean you weren't distracting those around you. Besides is your friend really going to say "Yeah that was rude as hell and I wish you would have just left during the break?"  Probably not if she's your friend.  It is disrespectful no matter how bored you were.  Yes you paid for an educational class and it is unfortunate you didn't learn anything but don't make excuses about your behavior just because you paid for the class, that's like the kids in college who are jerks to the teacher because "they are paying for it" and think they can do whatever they please because of it.
