Woven Wrap Question

Sorry I know there have been a ton of wrap questions. I've been stalking Meredeth's Guide to Wrapping too - Thanks!

I am looking to buy a woven to mainly do a high back carry. My DD is almost 14 pounds, but I want it it last into toddler hood. She loves being in a Bjorn but it kills my back. I am willing to spend some money since I will ask for it for my birthday from DH, but I don't want him to think I am crazy either. I am just lost as to sizes, etc. I am 5' 7" 130lbs if that helps.

Any recs would be great!

Re: Woven Wrap Question

  • I would get rid of the Bjorn immediately first. As far as a rec. I have really only used the natibaby, I'm waiting on shipment of my other wraps. DD is 26 lbs, and I am 34 weeks pregnant and I do the ruck carry with it and have no stress on my back at all! I'm not sure on the size, it seems each wrap has a different size chart. I'm also 5'7 and my natibaby is a 2, which I believe is 4.6 meters

  • A BB Slen will take you through toddlerhood and is pretty easy to learn how to wrap with and really comfortable. Def. get rid of the Bjorn. I would say you could probably pull of a size 5 and be able to do any carry you wanted.
  • I have a Storchenwiege (Leo Turquoise) size 4.6 meters, and it is plenty long for all the carries I've tried so far. I am 5'4" and 150 lbs. If I do a back rucksack, I have too much fabric to tie in the front, so I think the next size down would have worked good for the carries I'm doing right now. I am working on a double hammock (seems like I will need all the length for that one), but I haven't gotten it down yet. Also, if you can get more than one woven, I would get a longer one and shorter one (for simple out and about carries). Too bad birthdays only come around once a year, and I've already used mine up :(
  • Oh.. and DS is already 17 lbs. and the wrap is crazy comfortable (unless I wrap him to loose or get the fabric bunched up over my shoulder. Practice is key to wrapping!
  • Glad the guide is helpful ;-)

I'm a wee taller and heavier than you and can do everything with a 5 (including double hammock which take the most length).  You can use shorter lengths for things like ruck sack and even shorter for ruck tied under the bum (RUB).

As for brands - really any of the ones I have listed are good quality.  A lot of it depends on what kind of wrap you like (thick, thin, etc).

I've been recommending BB Slens a lot lately because they are very comfortable, great through toddlerhood, easy to care for, and the most reasonably priced.  Lots of people recommend Girasols and Neobulles as good beginner wraps because they are also pretty easy to wrap with and tend to be a bit less expensive.

The best advice is probably to look around and see what color/design jumps out at you!

  • Thanks for all the help ladies! I have it narrowed down (I think) to a Girasol or BB Slen. I fell in love with a Girasol design that is out of stock :( I emailed the website and hopefully they will have good news for me about when it will be back in stock! Choosing a design is tough!

I can't wait to have one though!
