Intro and a question for you ladies

Hi, my name is Jo and I am currently 23 weeks pregnant with our first child.  DH and I will be celebrating our 2nd anniversary in June.  DH is in the Air Force and we live in Spokane, WA, which is on the eastern side of Washington about 15 miles from the Idaho border.

So here is my question for you.  How many of you started your maternity leave expecting to go back to work and then decided that you wanted to SAH?  This is something that we're tossing around right now and I just don't know if you have to pay back the pay you were given while on maternity leave.  I know that it is possible you may have to reinburse for what the company paid for health insurance benefits and such, but I don't have any benefits like that through work.  I am mainly wondering about the part-time disability I would be paid and if I could possibly have to pay it back if we decide for me to not return to work.

Thanks for any input you might have!

Re: Intro and a question for you ladies

  • Welcome and congrats on your pregnancy!

I had no intention of going back to work, but I was a teacher and went back after maternity leave with only one week of school left. So technically, I went back and then finished my contract.

I know lots of people who don't tell work they aren't coming back until/during maternity leave. I don't think you have to pay anything back though.

  • welcome!

I had planned to go back.  While on mat leave, I started working e/ my job to get an alternate schedule b/c I was quickly realizing our original plan was not going to work for us.  They were unable to accommodate and I ended up resigning (2 weeks later, I got a WAH position from them though).

  • I was undecided when I went on maternity leave. I decided shortly after DD was born to stay home completly. I think short term disability is different depending on your state and how much you have put into it. I got quite a bit for short term disability but that is because the year before I had made quite a bit of money. Then there is also FMLA if you qualify too.

  • So I think my original post was a little confusing with the short term disability part.  Hopefully this will clarify.  Here is how the maternity leave working with my company.  The first 5 days are taken out of my PTO.  The next 5 weeks are paid at 80% (I've had people tell me that it is short term disability, but I'm not sure where that money is coming from...) and then the last 6 weeks are unpaid.

So what I'm wondering about is the 5 weeks of 80% pay, if we could possibly have to pay that back.  I know that I need to talk to somebody at work, but I don't really know how to bring it up to them yet and when I do talk to them I want it to be a little closer to when I'm due.

    Thanks!

  • You should consult your employee handbook. I have never heard of a company making you pay back anything.

Although I adopted, I did plan to continue my work after our son was born. I stayed home for the first 4 months and then went back for four months and now I'm back to being SAH.

Some moms work but hate leaving their LO. Some moms NEED their work for their sanity and to maintain a happy family.

It's all going to depend where you fall after your LO comes into your life.

    Good luck!

  • you should definitely confirm w/ your employer, but I did not have to pay anything back
