Really dumb crockpot question

I have never left the house with the crockpot turned on. It just doesn't seem entirely "safe" to leave it on and then go off somewhere.

I also don't leave the washing machine or dryer going while I am not at home just in case there were some sort of flood/fire/etc.

I have to go somewhere this afternoon and our dinner will not be done by the time I leave.

Is it okay to leave the crockpot cooking while I go out for a few hours?

People do this all the time, right?

I do a lot of cooking, but this has never come up before.

Re: Really dumb crockpot question

  • I used to have issues with this too especially since I would be gone 9+ with work. I have a programmable crockpot and tired it 1x while I would be around to make sure it worked and have since used it regularly. I'm sure it's perfectly safe.

  • I never, ever leave the house with anything water running but I have a bunch of water horror stories.  I leave the house with the crock pot going and it's fine.  It's designed for you to set it and then go to work, so that you come home to hot food.
  • i leave mine on all day all the time.  i have one of the programmable ones that tells it to cook for x-amt of time then to keep warm from there-on-out.  we've never had any issues.  i thought that's what crockpots were good for?

  • Thanks for the quick answers.

I have the timer on and it will go to the warm setting afterwards.

I figured that people do this all the time. I'm a bit of a worrier and didn't want to burn the house down while cooking dinner.

  • I have only recently started using the crockpot. I'll put something on to cook and go to sleep (sometimes). Otherwise, it just cooks while I do other things around the house.
