Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does anyone else have a kid who just won't drink milk?

At first I thought it was just the sippy cup, but I was wrong. We have been without bottles now for over a month, and he will drink water out of the sippy no problem, but the milk is a huge challenge. Almost always, if you give him a sippy of both, he will look at the contents and then choose the water.

I am not terribly concerned, because he gets plenty of other dairy/calcium rich foods, but it just seems so....odd.

Yesterday, he drank MAYBE 6 oz of milk.

Any tricks to help me get him to take more??

  • We are still having the milk + sippy challenge, too.  D actually had about 12 ounces the other day, and I couldn't believe it.  We have had days where we are lucky if he drinks 3 oz.

The best time for us to get milk into him is when we bring the sippy in to him first thing in the morning.  He had been rejecting it when we first cut out the bottle (even though he had been getting it for months), but he's back to drinking a good portion of it, I think because he's so hungry from not eating all night and he hasn't had breakfast yet.

The other thing that I do is make sure his water sippy is hidden at meal times and after dinner, because D will choose water over milk too, but he'll drink the milk if it's the only thing he can see.  Lately he's been doing well drinking from his sippy while hanging out before bedtime, so that's helped us too.  GL!!

  • betsnup, I was hoping you would chime in.  I think I need to just not offer the water and see what happens.  I don't want to totally deprive him of fluids, but 6 oz of milk, and 20 oz of water isn't right either!

    Thanks for the tips.

  • Yeah, our biggest thing was realizing that we needed to not let D see the water, because he will pick the water over milk any day.  One other thing that has helped get some milk into him is DH and I drink milk with dinner every night now (we were bad about that before).  But now D sees us drinking it, and will want a drink of our milk, and we can usually get him to realize he has the same stuff in his cup, too.
  • One of my nephews is 10 and he has never liked milk.  They make sure he gets other foods that give him what he needs & he's perfectly healthy.  It doesn't hurt to still try here & there, but if he doesn't like it there's nothing you can really do!
  • Cinnamon!

  • C won't drink milk either.  We give her the raspberry flavored Kefir, but even with that we are lucky if she drinks 6-8 oz a day.  Sometimes I can get away with mixing a little milk in with it.  I make sure she has whole milk yogurt and cheese everyday.  Good luck!
  • DD refuses milk.  I have tried all different kinds of cups like straw, hard spout and soft spout and nothing is working.  I tried flavoring it too but it wasn't enough.  I got a couple of the horizon flavored milk boxes and she drank some of the chocolate last night.  I just don't want to give her all that extra sugar all the time.  She hasn't really had milk in over a month now and I have just been giving her yobaby yogurt and cheese to supplement.  She loves both so at least she is getting something.
  • dd doesn't drink a lot of milk, but nutritionally speaking milk isn't that important IMO.  i think there's definitely an over emphasis on it.  dd eat really well, so that's partially why i don't care that much.

  • Liliana doesn't drink milk at all but has kefir every day, which has probiotics and is like a smoothie almost.

Pedi said that we were giving DD too much milk, she was on the bottle too.  They only need about 12 oz a day of it.  I'm not too upset but I would like her drink at least one sippy a day.  At least she is getting dairy elsewhere.

This was me growing up...I think I had my last glass of milk around age 9...I eat other calcium rich things but CAN'T stand milk!

Kel, we tried the Kefir and he refused it as well. I even tried chocolate milk and he was cool with it for a second, and then grabbed his water.

His weight and everything is perfectly fine, so I am not worried. It's nice to see I am not alone, though!

  • DD refused to drink milk of any kind (cow, soy, hemp, almond, rice, etc.)  We've tried it all, flavored and plain.  She refused to take a bottle and would only drink straight from the tap, so I wasn't all too surprised when she turned one and wouldn't drink it from a cup either.  She gets calcium from plenty of other sources, so I'm not worried and neither is our pediatrician.

  • Not mine she is a milkaholic I have to limit her milk.
  • Isabella doesn't drink much milk either.  She's a great eater, gets yogurt and cheese daily, and is growing right on track, so I'm not worried about it.
