Pedi recommended a...

introducing a sippy cup with handles to DD. Do/did any of you introduce one at 6 mo? Which one did you purchase? I bought an Avent magic trainer cup (i think thats what it called) and DD cant suck anything out of it. She holds it and puts it to her mouth though. Should I just give it to her to "play" with until she can use it better?

  • We started with a nuby trainer that has a straw at 6 months. He drinks really well from it now.
  • We introduced one at 6 months but he didn't catch on until almost 8 months.  The one that worked for us was the nuk sippy cup.

  • We have tried several and they still just think they are toys.

  • We introduced one around 6 months but she is just now really getting it.  She does best with the Born Free cup but it is not spill proof.  She just does not suck hard enough to get anything out of the others we have.  The Nuby one with the silicone spout also works pretty good.

  • I've tried both Avent and Born Free, so far DS just uses it as a teether.  Oh well, he'll figure it out eventually!

  • My DD still chews on her sometimes and will drink out of it sometimes. Just let your LO get used to it for now; you have plenty of time.

  • We started giving it to DD a little before 6 mo, but she still just plays with it. We should probably start giving her more practice with it.

  • I gave DD one just before 6 months, with BM in it. She held it well and put it right up to her mouth. I'll probably keep giving it to her off and on, just to get her used to holding it.

They aren't really supposed to have water or juice until 1 year. Water is bad for their kidneys (babies have died from too much), and juice has a lot of sugar (even unsweetened has natural sugar).

  • I gave K a Nuby - until recently he would just chew it - now he will drink a sip every once in a great while.
  • DD uses a Tilty cup very well! We love them!

This exactly.  You might want to try the Nuby straw cup with handles...my DS wasn't into any of the sippy cups I tried before this one and now he's a champ.

    Same kids, same cups.

  • DD loves a regular cup, so that is what we give to her.  She'll take two or three sips after eating solids.  She'd drink water from it all day, but I don't give her too much.
A speech therapist that I know told me that the no-spill sippy cups are bad for their language and swallowing development, so we haven't used those at all.
  • We introduced a sippy cup with 2 handles at 6 months.  The one that's easiest to suck out of (IMO) is the Nuby Grip 'N Sip.  You should try out a few different ones until LO can easily drink from it.
