Parenting after 35

naps

I think I started a bad habit & need to break it. She really won't take a nap or fall asleep unless she is taking the bottle or nursing. I don't want her teeth to get screwed up so I have to fix this. I just put her down 10 min ago to try to fall asleep on her own. She was real tired, but is still whining & refusing to sleep.

The only other way I am sucessful is to put her in the stroller, put on some music & the stove fan & she nods off.

How do you get LO to take a nap? Do you just put them away & they fall asleep?

Re: naps

  • FP Seahorse--best $15 or so I've spent.

Nice dark, quiet room.   Doesn't hurt that his crib is up against the wall that is next to the washer and dryer, too.

Definitely break the bottle habit pronto.

  • I was afraid of that too when she was younger.

I kept her up til she started wiping her eyes.  Then if she cant fall asleep on her own, I would give her a paci, swaddle her and cover her eyes.  Now that she is older, I either hold her while rocking to classical music when she is tired  (with paci) or just lay her down with a blanket she can rub her face with.

Right now, I am watching Gossip Girl and she fell asleep playing with a peeled radish.  Rubbing her face with a stuffed animal.

  • Do you have a routine at naptime?  I always turn down the lights in DD's room, and we snuggle together and read a few books.  Then I put her in the crib with a couple of books.  When we dropped the naptime bottle I started giving her a bottle maybe 1/2 hr earlier in another room.  Then we'd go in her room and start the nap routine.  It helped lessen the association of the bottle with sleeping.  Once she was doing well with that, I dropped the bedtime bottle, too.

I think S was a couple of months older than your DD when we did this, though.

  • Does nursing to sleep really screw up their teeth??? Oh dear, I need to sort that out then Sad
  • Bummer.  It did take C a little while to warm up to it.

It's the sugars in the milk that stay in the mouth that can cause decay.
