So this is the most recent photo of my hair. I know it's mostly covered up but it will give you a good enough idea. As you can see my hair is kind of a lightish brown/dark blonde. When I get my hair colored, usually I have them just highlight it with a lighter blonde. I've always wanted to go platinum blonde, but it's too much maintenance so that won't be happening.
Getting to the point here... Do you think my skin tone could handle going dark brown? Usually I have pretty clear skin, but there are occasions when it's a little blotchy and I fear that the contrast between the dark hair and the pale skin plus red blotches will look terrible, esp. when I have big tired bags under my eyes. If you think that dark brown would look bad, what color would you suggest instead? Should I just stick with the blonde? Thanks! And sorry if that photo is huge!
Re: XP: Advice needed from a hairdresser.
I am not a hairdresser but I think you shouldnt go too dark.
Do you have a hairdresser you trust to ask?
I am not a hair dresser...but it looks like we have the same type of skin tone. and I would say a nice chocolate brown would look awesome!
I have been both blonde and brunette myself.
GL!!!
I would start with dark brown low lights and if you feel like it doesn't wash you out after a few weeks then go all the way. I definitely think you have a good skin tone to go darker and it IS much less maintenance and often looks healthier than lighter hair. You could also do a demi-permanent color that will fade out so if it becomes too dark it'll lighten quit a bit in a few weeks. GL!
Edit: I *am* a hairdresser
There's no doubt you can pull off some shade of brown -- the trick is to finding the best one for your skin tone. From the photo, your skin looks creamy and warm. You'll probably look best with a warmer shade of brown.
If you want to try it without going all over dark, you could start with some low lights and see how you like a slightly darker color. If you like it, then get more low lights (or a darker shade) the next time?
Another option is to use a demi-permanent color which tends to look more natural and will fade gradually so your regrowth won't be as noticable.
Finally, most stylists will do a complimentary color consultation. That's the best way to find the right color for you.
Good luck, and post photos when you get it done!
I'm here now I was napping with the hubby! lol So the darker color in the picture is I am assuming your natural color? How much darker were you thinking than that natural color? Like the pp said if you go to much darker it will be more trouble to keep it up then just highlights. Because the highlights are broken up so when they grow out there is not this harsh line at your roots. If you were to go an all over way darker color you would get that line of demarcation. I would suggest semi permanent color. It holds up just as well but doesn't have that harsh line as much and honestly just comes up more shiny and will fade better than permanent! I would suggest something with a warmer base also. Most people do not look good with ashy browns and the warm undertones will make it look softer. Maybe a golden brown?
