Are you gonna save the umbilical stump?

I used to babysit for a kid whose parents saved his umbilical stump in a little baggie in his room, with the other knicknacks from his birth (hospital bracelets, labor notes, etc).  I can't imagine why they'd want to keep it, and I didn't really want to ask (I was also sorta scared they'd tell me it was his foreskin, not his umbilical stump, so I just kept my mouth shut).  But is this seriously something people do?

Re: Are you gonna save the umbilical stump?

  • I personally find that to be a little ... gross. That almost seems equivalent to saving your toe nail clippings or something. That's the level of grossness I compare that too. However, I understand saving like a lock of hair from baby's first haircut kinda thing... Just seems very different !!

I guess some people do it, but some people also eat their placentas, so....  I think it's weird.  I couldn't wait for DS's to fall off so we could get rid of it!

  • Ew...seems gross to me. I won't be saving it! My friend's daughter's fell off and they couldn't find it. Well, turns out the dog picked it up and ATE it. Barf!
  • Gross.  No way!
  • No, what will you do with a piece of dried up and crusty skin tissue? Save it and show it your LO's future spouse???

(Was that on Meet the Fockers?)

Yeah - I don't think he's actually noticed it... yet.  Just wait til this poor kid has friends over and they pick it up and ask him about it.  That'll sure help with his popularity at school!!!

  • Anyone else remember Meet the Fockers when it falls into the fondue?

YUCK! No thanks, I will take pictures and save baby outfits, but anything that comes off my LO's body can just go...

  • The subject header alone made me want to vomit.

  • I have a memory box where I save stuff for DS. I have things like the hospital bracelets and first lock of hair, coming home from hospital outfit, ect. But I deffinately didnt save any cord stumps or foreskin. GROSS!
  • Definitely not. But I will confess that my mom DID save mine, ew. It's in my baby book and every time I have stumbled across it over the years, I get grossed out. And it's mine!! Yuck.
  • My assistant at work saved them from all three of her kids.  Gross.  I definitely won't be saving mine.  There will be plenty of cuter things to save.

  • No way. To each their own of course but I think it's nasty to save it. My mom didn't save ours. She said she could barely touch it to throw it away when it finally fell off! haha
  • Ick!....NO....Ick!

  • No!  Just makes me think of Meet the Parents II when they saved Focker's circumcision skin.  Gross.

Exactly this, ugh.  She actually tried showing them to me one day... I'm like, seriously?  You save this crap, but none of the typical baby stuff that you SHOULD save?  She's a piece of work.
