High-Risk Pregnancy

GD- next pregnancy...

Next pregnancy I think I'll take the 1 hour glucose test in the afternoon.

This time I took it first thing in the morning- and I tend to have the highest numbers of the day at that time (still within "range" though)

DH mentioned that perhaps if I had taken the 1 hour in the middle of the day, my body would have reacted differently to the glucose drink and I would have passed... which is quite possibly true- since I've been able to keep my numbers in check with diet alone.....

Just a note I thought I'd mention for next time (I also took the 3 hour first thing in the morning, too)

Re: GD- next pregnancy...

  • I was thinking the same thing the other day.  Both times my appts were in the morning.  I am diet controlled and I eat the same thing for breakfast everyday but sometimes its way under and sometimes it is just under.  The morning just doesn't work for my body but the rest of the day I do just fine.  I will def. be doing afternoon glucose testing next time around!

  • I've had the same thought. I barely failed my 1 hr (3 points), and I took it mid-morning after I'd had orange juice and some candy (just didn't think about it).  The 3 hr I took in the morning.  My fasting number is always in the high normal. But it regulates throughout the day. By after lunch i'm doing fine.  I even had a piece of cake with dinner Sunday and saw no change in my number.

my only question is----- have you changed your diet drastically because of GD?  or have you pretty kept eating the way you were before?  If you've changed your diet and that's the only reason you are within the limits then it seems to me that you got the right diagnoses.  If you haven't had to change your diet to eat this way then yeah maybe you were misdiagnosed.  Either way I'd think that if you have GD you'd fail the test if it was taken morning, afternoon, or night.  Also even if someone only has issues with one number a day (be it fasting, breakfast, lunch, dinner) it seems that a diet change would still be important because you wouldn't want your sugars spiking every single day during that time because you weren't aware of the GD.
