What are good protein substitutes for meat?

I hope I am getting enough protein in my diet, we just eat meat so rarely, I eat mostly cheese, veggies, and whole grains (whole wheat pasta and quiona).

    Milk

    Nuts

    Eggs

    Peanut butter

I wouldn't worry too much....  Most Americans consume waaaay too much protein.

  • Nuts! Handful of almonds, pecans, etc give a huge protein boost.

  • Make sure if you eat non meat sources of protein that you make complete protein combinations.  Unfortunately, meat is one of the only ways to get all of the amino acids your body needs.  Beans, legumes. and nuts are also good sources to add to your diet.  And if you are dairy, cottage cheese is a good source of protein as well as greek yogurt.

This! I buy the 100 calorie packs of almonds to munch on during the day.

Not true at all.  I've been a vegetarian for 16 years and get everything I need without meat.

Second post is right- eggs are actually supposedly the highest quality protein you can get next to breastmilk (granted, I saw that on a nutritional video in HS... not sure of its validity)

  • beans (beans cooked in a pan with garlic & tomatoes then on toast is yummmm!), tofu is a good source too - I buy organic flavored tofu & eat it with veggies for lunch, plus tofu has a lot of good dha in it for brain development, & nuts of course, oh & chickpeas!

Didn't say it WAS the only way, I said it was ONE of the only ways. I've been vegetarian for more than 10 years myself.  Not eating meat does make it more challenging to get all the protein you need though, especially if you are a more exclusive vegetarian.

THIS! My freezer is stocked with Morningstar products. They can get pretty pricey at the supermarket, so try Target...$3 a box!

  • If you can get it, Quorn makes awesome meatless products (in the freezer section).  They have a "fried" chicken-style cutlet with gruyere cheese that is one of my favorites!  Plus lots of strips, crumbles, and even a "roast."  It's tastier than the soy products and takes on seasoning really well.
