GD Number Question/opinion

I test 4 times a day...1st thing am, and then 2 hours after start of every meal.  They want my after meal # to be at 120 or less.

So for lunch I had two PB&J's (low sugar jelly of course) on those really thin round wheat breads, I had the same thing yesterday but with some cottage cheese as well and my # was 104.  I test today and it read 195!  I've never had a # like that, although I've only been doing this a week.  Either way I barely failed the GD test, only by a few #'s.

So after I got the 195, I went and washed my hands and tested again on a different finger and got a 138, tested again a couple minutes later and it was 134, so obviously the 138 was more accurate.   What do you think caused me to have a 195 just a minute or two earlier?   A glitch? Maybe my hands were dirty?   I had a 150 after dinner last night which is also very high compared to my other #'s, although I blamed it on my dinner.  Now I'm wondering if maybe that was another fluke.  I didn't test a 2nd time.

I left a message for the nurse but I'm going into a meeting so probably won't get to talk to her until tomorrow.

Any opinions would be great!

  • I was told don't have handcreme on (which here in MI I do w/the cooler weather) as that could alter your #.  So I usually wash my hands right before I test, who knows how my hands are after I've been reading or playing w/DD, etc...& I want the most accurate #.

  • it's normal to get a super high number if your hands aren't clean---- even if they have lotion or hand sanitizer on them it will throw off your numbers. I'm sure the 138 was the right reading and not the 195.

  • Two words: hand lotion!!!

Lol - since you tested two other times and got a fairly close number, use those.

  • I was also told that from reading to reading there could be a 20% variance (???!!!!???!).  This was because I had a similar thing happen yesterday at fasting.  Of course my #'s were high all day so I'm guessing the extreme high number was wrong and the lower high numbers were more accurate.

  • Ditto pps, but want to add don't use hand sanitizer either.  that will really get your numbers through the roof.

  • I bought a box of single use alcohol wipes from the drugstore and I keep those with my meter.  I noticed when I started swiping my fingers with those I got more accurate numbers.  If you do get those make sure the alcohol is dry before you prick your finger though because if it's still wet from the alcohol the numbers can get messed up.

Oh what a great idea!  I think I'll have to go get some of those!

Just so you don't go crazy trying to find them in the store, they were actually right near the diabetes testing stuff.  I was looking all over the store like an idiot instead of right there lol!

  • Yes, great suggestion, Dr told me to get these when they gave me the tester- make a huge difference in numbers.
  • My numbers are always out of whack! I'm glad I;m not the only one. I really freak out when I have a high number.
  • definitely get the alchohol wipes but make sure your fingers dry completely-if they are still wet it can make you have a higher number by 10-50 points. Also sometimes you have food on your hands which screws up your reading!i once ate pancakes and got syrup on my finger and didnt realize it(im type one this was before being preg)and i checked my sugar and it was 400 something!of course i freaked out and checked it again(twice)on my other hand and got 2 normal numbers.
