High-Risk Pregnancy

Just got off the phone w my doctor

Background - I have been going for sonograms every two weeks for the last few months to check on my cervix.  I had a leep procedure done a few years ago and the doctor wanted to keep an eye on it.

He called me this morning to let me know that my cervix length is fine however it's beginning to funnel.  I know that there is a possibility that I will be able to continue minimal activity - going to and from work - but I am scared out of my mind that this might not end well.

I guess there is no real point to my post just wondering if other people have experienced the same issue.

  • Ask if they can do a rescue cerclage.  Funneling is nothing to mess with - it weakens your cervix and you may start to shorten quickly.  You may be able to keep more of you activity by getting the cerclage now.

  • I would ask about a cerclage since you have funneling.

I had an emergency cerclage placed with my first pregnancy at 16.5 weeks (completely funneled/dilated) I was on strict bedrest the entire 8 weeks I lasted.  I was only allowed to go to the bathroom/have a shower.  No getting food, snacks etc.  My cerclage held for 6 weeks-then shortened in week 7 and by week 8 I was admitted to the hospital 3-4 cm dilated and I delivered 4 days later.

This time I had a permanent cerclage placed pre pregnancy.  I have cervix checks every two weeks and so far (I'm 23 weeks) my cervix is closed.

Cerclages can work but since the cervix is so dynamic a lot can also change very quickly.  I was okay with doing strict bedrest since I felt that I was doing everything I could to help the situation.

This- mine was funneling at 23 weeks and I was put on strict bedrest...

  • Please ask for a cerclage before its too late! they dont like to do them  too much after 20 weeks or if it gets worse fast, ir may be too short or too dialated to get one!!  If you need one you'll want it soon!

I started to funnel/shorten to 15mm at 19 weeks and got a cerclage the same afternoon it was discovered! Im on bed rest for at least 10 more weeks to make sure the cerclage is holding!! Bedrest isnt the worst thing ever, it's natural to be upset about limited activity but in all reality I don't think about it anymore.... it's whatever it takes to keep him in me!!

  • I started funneling at 21 weeks. I've been on bedrest since.  I did not have a cerclage. They did not want to do one when I started to funnel/shorten. So, I've been taking weekly progesterone injections and staying in bed, and I'm almost 29 weeks. A lot of women have cerclages and it has worked for them.
  • Just adding in to the "please ask about getting a cerclage." Mine was placed at 24 weeks, due to an incompetent cervix, measuring less than 2 and funneling....just hit 35 weeks and hpe to get to full term, things look good so far.

    fingers crossed for everyone :)

  • We found my cervix funneling/shortening around 21.5 weeks.  My dr was against doing a cerclage because I am having twins, but I went on bedrest that same week.  With bedrest, I have been able to stay pregnant until now (and hopefully 2 more weeks at least)!  If you are funneling, there should definitely be something done, whether it is a cerclage, bedrest, or both.  Good luck.
