s/o t&c's post - Cosco vs. Britax?

C is probably going to outgrow his Snugride very shortly and I have no idea where to start for convertible seats. Right now, I'm kind of swinging between the Cosco Scenera or Britax Roudabout. Both are eligible for the diapers.com coupon tomandcourt posted below and both are rated pretty well by Consumer Reports, etc.

I know the Cosco is supposed to be kind of bare bones but very safe. Are the Britax features, like the extra padding and tangle-less straps worth the extra $100?

I'm also considering getting both - the Britax for my car and the Cosco for DH's 2 door Honda Civic. Right now, C spends half the week in each car.

Thoughts? Thanks!

  • I need to pay attention to this as DS is so close to outgrowing his too Indifferent

  • Uh, whoops. I guess we are getting them both now, thanks to Diapers.com super fast checkout. I seemed to have ordered them without realizing it.

Oh well, they have free returns so I would still like to hear your opinions!

  • Baby Bargains gave Cosco a D- and that's all I know about it. After I saw that, I stayed away from all Cosco brands (they also  make Eddie Bauer). I have the 2008 book edition.
  • We just got two convertibles this last weekend.  We went with the Britax Roundabout 50 for my car and the Graco MyRide 65 for DH's.  I got the Britax at BRU with one of their 20% off coupons.  I really like both seats.  The Britax fits nicely in my car, the Graco is bigger so it was better for DH's car.  The Graco was about $20 cheaper than the Roundabout but it will last a little longer weight-wise.
  • We bought the Britax Marathon for my car and have not yet bought a new car seat for DHs car since she still "fits" in the Safeseat and she is rarely in DHs car.  I think we will find an inexpensive forward only seat for his since it will get little use.  I really like the Marathon.  It's big for my Prius, especially rear facing, but DD seems really comfortable in it and I have to say the tangle free straps and the little velcro strips are a nice bonus.  The Graco straps were always all a flutter.  Is it worth the money, eh, I don't know.  We got it on a great sale at Albee Baby so it was nearly a $100 less than sticker price.  At that price, it was worth the money.
  • we got the britax boulevard (check albeebabyDOTcom- they have them for $229 and it is free shipping). it has the side impact wings and it gets really high rating. The only downfall is the thing is pretty big- but it is nice to have the one strap to pull to tighten everything.

  • I bought the Evenflo Triumph first as a test run for my car.  I am not minding it as much now that DS is forward facing, but overall I don't like it (the straps are a pain--both for adjustments and just getting DS in and out of the car).

So, I waited for a sale and bought the Britax Marathon for DH's car.  It really is a great quality car seat.

Both the Evenflo and Britax are pretty huge.

  • I bought a Scenera to keep in my Mom's car - it seemed fine, but, was a little hard to install at the correct angle rear facing.  Then again, I was installing it myself, and it was in a mini-van outside the airport after getting like 4 hours of sleep the night before.

We got it on sale for $45.  Couldn't beat the price.

In our own car, we have the Radian 80.  She was just more comfortable in it, because there's some room to move her legs around (doesn't go as high around the leg area...)

  • I am quickly thinking that I made a mistake with the Britax Roundabout. It only goes up to 40 lbs. I think this is going to go back and I'll get the $229 Boulevard from Albee Baby.

  • we have the Marathon which goes to 65lbs. 40lbs is what, a 4-yr old? at that point a kid will probably not want to sit in a car seat anyway and would be tall/big/old enough for a booster
  • There is a Roundabout 50 that goes to 50 lbs.  I figure our next kid can then take it.
  • We got a Britax Marathon at my shower which I now use in my car. Some friends of DH's gave us a used Britax Marathon which is what we use for his car. However, if they hadn't give that to us, we would've bought te Scenera. We did get the Scenera for the grandparent's car and it works fine.

FWIW, here are the Consumer Reports ratings:

    Britax Roundabout

    Overall Score - 66

    Crash Protection - Very Good

    Ease of Use - Good

    Rear Facing - Very Good

    Forward Facing - Excellent

    Cosco Scenera

    Overall Score - 64

    Crash Protection - Excellent

    Ease of Use - Good

    Rear Facing - Good

    Forward Facing - Excellent
