I haven't even begun to look for day cares yet and I'm already overwhelmed. I don't even know where to start! Anyone have any recommendations on specific places, or just tips on how/where to start looking?
I spent months and months on this--I started at 14 w pregnant. It was the worst thing ever.
We ended up at the Smarter Toddler in Columbus Circle. I had problems with them. THey offered us a spot at Smarter Toddler at W.89th St (much closer to home) but the infant room teacher was NASTY to me when I just went to meet them so I said no to that. Then I kept my son in the Columbus Circle Smarter Toddler until I went to pick him up and found him asleep in a bouncer, wrapped in a blanket (I had been battling them about NOT wrapping him in a blanket, even took my blanket home, but they used some other blanket), with A BOTTLE PROPPED IN HIS MOUTH. Yes, asleep and with a bottle propped in his mouth. I was horrified.
That was the end of daycare for us. We have a nanny now. There is a reason there are so many families use nannies on the UWS. Our nanny is fabulous!
Good to know - thanks! Did you use an agency to find your nanny?
I just read your article, and Smarter Toddler was one of the places I was going to look at on the UWS - but can't even get on the waiting list. I'm 6 months pregnant, and looking for daycare or a nanny to start the first of January. I've been debating between the two - not sure how I felt about a nanny with an infant. How did you find your nanny? Do you have any good recomendations?
If you're looking for a family daycare (which is a little less expensive), there are two places I keep hearing about: Mama Bear's on 91st (no website) and Good Dreams: https://web.me.com/alpha7093/GDDC/Welcome.html
Depending on where you are, you might also look at the Mother Hale Learning Center, which is in Harlem: https://www.halehouse.org/mhlc
Good luck!! It's a daunting process.
"For a long time there were only your footprints & laughter in our dreams & even from such small things, we knew we could not wait to love you forever."
Do not choose a family daycare unless you interview the neighbors of it. They are in the best position to tell you what happens there. If the families in the building are sending their kids to other family daycares outside of the one in their building, it is a good sign that is not a good family daycare.
Your child could end up here see links below From what i heard there were many other attacks caught on tape, but landlord is withholding tapes until subpoenaed by court. The policeis here every other day!
Metamorphosis on 600 west 164th street. That is the one I used and it is a plus that the caretakers speak Spanish. I am getting childcare and a bilingual baby at the same time...Also, many professors use their childcare. A family picnic is coming up, you may want to attend to meet and greet the kids and families
Re: Daycare on UWS? Or how to find?

We live on 110th and found Columbia to be a great resource. This page is helpful, as it lists some of the centers in the area:

There's also the Bank Street School, on 111th.
