I am working on a long document that a bunch of people are making changes and additions to. I refer to the main copy of the document that I make all edits to as the "master copy." I was just informed that the term "master" is racist, and I should call it the "control copy."
Re: Seriously, this is racist?
ditto.
Yes it racist if the other documents that the people are working on are called slave documents....but I doubt that's the case.
I've always heard it called master document as well. Someone is a bit sensitive, I'm guessing.
'master' means the original creation and the people you work with are frigging idiots.
I was so hesitant to ask this for fear of starting a debate, but since you brought it up first, what is the race of the person who made the original comment?
She is African-American.
Just one person. Not all of them.
Master is the correct term. As an adjective it means of or pertaining to a master from which copies are made... Isn't that what you are doing?
Overly sensitive...
I call BS on that. Now if you where saying you were the master...
Master has too many uses and meanings to be associated with that one particular use by anyone rational IMO. Not that I would not make the "change" if I had to work with crazy sensitive.
Start calling her sally and see if she catches on....
In my unscientific poll of African-American coworkers, I got the following replies:
1) 3 eyerolls
2) "That girl is damn crazy."
3) "You have got to be kidding."
4) "Looks like someone needs more work to keep her busy." (From a supervisor.)
5) "Well maaaybeeee... Nah, don't worry about it."
Someone should alter a Master Lock Company ad that shows their company motto as "keeping negros behind doors, one lock at a time".
This. <eye roll>
Ridiculous!
We called them "Originals" everywhere I've worked - but then we never "reworked" them...we just made copies from them.
