I really prefer Orange Beach or Gulf Shores to Dauphin Island but there are other ladies on here that live on the coast and can give you better advice than me. I have only visited so I don't know all the details. GL
DI is fine for a family vacation if you're not interested in being entertained and can make your own entertainment! The beach is very pretty, clean, and you'll have miles of it practically to yourself. It's not very developed (I think there are just a couple of hotels).
There are only a handful of restaurants -- and the grocery stores are more expensive Mom and Pop places. My advice would be to stop and buy groceries in Mobile at Winn-Dixie or Fresh Market before heading down for the week.
The Estuarium and Fort Gaines on the East End of the island is really cool and you can easily take the ferry over to Fort Morgan and spend the day there and drive into Gulf Shores/Orange Beach if you want to spend a day sight-seeing over there.
I agree that I would prefer Gulf Shores/Orange Beach (just for the ability to eat out, so I don't have to cook so much), BUT if you've already booked, Dauphin Island is wonderful too and you will still have a great family vacation. I live in Mobile and we're down at DI a couple of times a month at least, so if you have any questions, please let me know! You can email me at MrsB2007 at gmail dot com!
I'm in Orange Beach...I would recommend taking the ferry over and spending time in Gulf Shores/OB. If you want restaurant recs, I have plenty. Let me know what kind of food you're looking for!
I'm not sure what Bellingrath Gardens has going on right now since it's been so cold, but it's not far from Dauphin Island. You may also want to check out the battleship in Mobile.
Re: Dauphin Island Recs and reviews please!!...
I agree that Gulf Shores or Orange Beach is better than Dauphin. There is just not much to do in Dauphin. Here is a good site for Gulf Shores

You can look at the houses and such along with prices. Hope this helps!
