Oops, DS is napping @7pm

Ok, so I am trying to get DS to take 2 out of 3 naps in his crib.  I've transitioned his first afternoon nap to the crib, and I really thought I'd be successful with the second one. FAIL. Bad mommy didn't realize that DS was still hungry and unsuccessfully let him CIO until I couldn't withstand any more. So then I fed him, and by this time it was 6pm. I put him in his swing as I thought this would be the easy way out... nope. DH arrived home and then DS was all excited and refused to sleep.  Then DH tried to feed him and he took another 6oz bottle (which, by the way, brings his total of the day to 33oz BEFORE his 8oz bedtime bottle...) and then he put him in the swing and he was fast asleep a few minutes before 7.

DS's bedtime is about 7:45/8pm.  What do I do? Wake him to put him to bed? Give him a later bed time tonight? We were even trying to move his bedtime up in preparation for Daylight Savings on Sunday.

  • I would just let him stay asleep at this point - why would you wake him up? If you're worried about the swing aspect, you can just gradually slow it down and he'll probably stay asleep in it.

  • My DS fell asleep for a nap today at 6:15 and I did wake him from that one, but at 7 I probably wouldn't have...tough call! I say let him sleep and just see what happens.

  • I agree with pp...let him sleep.  He may sleep through...especially considering how much he ate today.  Worst case he wakes up a  bit later, you feed him again and he goes back to sleep...or he wakes up earlier tomorrow morning...either way I'm sure you'll be able to get back on schedule tomorrow.
  • Ok, so perhaps we should have done that, considering we have one of the cameras for our monitor right above the swing (for when he naps there).  I did end up waking him around 7:30, fed him his dinner of avocados, and put him down for bed at 8 and he went right to sleep within minutes.  Hopefully it won't be a rough night.

  • I wonder if he's trying to move his bedtime up to 7:00?  Maybe try that some night this week?  My DD#2 goes down at 7 and DD#1 goes down at 7:30.  These are times they sort of settled on over time.

  • I agree with the moving up the bedtime if he had a good night last night.  Both of mine slowly moved up bedtimes around 4 or 5 months.  By the time they were STTN at 5-6mo their bedtimes were 6PM and they slept until 5 or 6 AM.  Then again mine never really developed that 3rd nap at the end of the day.
  • He slept from just after 8 to just before 6.  I've definitely been trying to get the bed time closer to 7, especially because of Daylight Savings this weekend. I definitely don't want him going to bed at 9! DH and I barely get enough time as it is...
