What should you NOT pack in the hospital bag?

Hi everyone! This is Laura here at The Bump with a question for our next magazine.

For moms-to-be who are planning to deliver in a hospital, do you have any suggestions for what they should NOT pack in their hospital bags? We have an editor here, for instance, who packed makeup and then never touched it!

Thanks!

  • Resist the temptation to purchase a nice nursing gown.  It will get trashed.
  • Loading the player...
  • We're having a c-section & my doctor advised me not to bring my own clothes since I'll be bleeding. The statement kinda scared me but it did extremly lighten our hospital bag.

  • Your own meds without doctor's consent. They'll give you the pain meds you need while you're there and you don't want to take anything on the side that might interact with the other medications you get in the hospital.
  • Toiletries, unless they're something you absolutely need. (i.e. soap, tooth brush, pads). Definately bring your own soaps/shampoos if you have special needs.

Diapers/wipes. no need to pack your own, unless I suppose you're going to do cloth.

There are things that I've packed for both of my first two births that I ended up never even looking at, but I'm sure other people do... (like books & entertainment, my own music, etc...)

  • Your own pillow. I heard somewhere to do that since it will make you feel more at home, but there are plenty of pillows, and you're not going to want to get your own pillow dirty with bodily fluids.
  • Honestly, the only things I used were my pillow, toothbrush, and my clothes to wear home.
  • What should you not pack? Booze.

But seriously, some...jeans! I packed a pair of maternity jeans but only felt like wearing sweatpants home. I had wanted to look "pulled together" when we left, but after an emergency C-section, a four-day hospital stay, and several trips up and down from the NICU to visit my preemie twins, comfort was key and "pulled together" a long shot.

On that note, don't pack only one set of clothes...I'd suggest packing two (like two pairs of sweatpants and two hoodies). You never know how things will go down...since I was in for a longer time, I didn't have to wear the hospital gown every day...but after a few days of wearing the same pair of pants and sweatshirt, I felt pastey nonetheless.
