Kaiser Preparation for Birth class

Anyone taken it - what did you think?  I went ahead and signed up for it because it is only $70 for myself and DH for 5, 2 hr sessions through my insurance.  We are first timers and my gut tells me to sign up for more than just one class, like maybe a care for newborns class and/or baby CPR class, things like that.  Any thoughts/recommendations?

Re: Kaiser Preparation for Birth class

  • DH and I never took any classes because we didn't want to..but if you feel like you should or want to then go for it! I know lots of women who took classes and they feel it helped them! I think its personal opinion! :D

  • I did the classes at Kaiser.  They helped me gain a calmness about giving birth, I left them then worrying how to care for the baby!

There was one day they talked a little about breastfeeding, but not ever having a child, holding a doll to your chest was a little awkward!

I wish we would have taken something more hands on, OR I wish the class offered a little more on care for the baby after they are born - my H had never changed a diaper, ways to swaddle, etc.  I am not sure if those classes are offered, but I think they could have spent at least an hour on those kinds of things.

Anyway, I think they were good for us!

  • I believe they have a class called something like 'bringing baby home' which is about taking care of baby.  Also I would TOTALLY recommend taking a breastfeeding class or hitting up your nearest LeLeche League meeting before you have the baby.  That is my biggest regret, not going to a breastfeeding class.

  • Thanks - I for sure want to take a breastfeeding class and DH is in as well.
  • I didn't really use anything from the class but I am glad we took it for the info we got. I would not take a repeat class when we have another baby, but I thought it was worth gaining a little knowledge and insight, and also being able to talk with other parents-to be.
  • I would recommend a more in depth class like Lamaze, Bradley or Hypnobirthing. I took a hospital class too and just didn't have the tools I needed to really deal with the pain. I did take the newborn class and a breastfeeding class through the hospital and those were great. I also went to La Leche meetings before I gave birth and basically asked them to tell me everything I needed to know to deal with potential issues right off the bat as I really wanted to be successful and that was great! BF'ing was super easy for me and I feel like much of that was due to my being well informed. I also highly recommend an infant CPR class. You will feel so much better knowing what to do in an emergency. I took one a long time ago and watched some videos to brush up before I had DS. I'll watch them again soon just to be sure I haven't forgotten anything.
  • I took the newborn care class at OHSU and it was quite informative...like what things on you may see on a baby that would freak new parents out (cradle cap, different types of rashes, umbilical cord stump, etc) that turn out to be perfectly normal. There were also stations to show you how to bathe your newborn, how to swaddle, change a diaper, car seat/safety help, and a station to try out different baby wraps. Some of the stuff I already knew from reading books but it was nice to have a nurse to talk to in person.

I definitely recommend a breastfeeding class also.  That turned out to be the most informative one and my husband learned a lot too - although I think after the class he had nightmares about engorged breasts!  :)
