Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How much blood is too much?

It looks like a lot to me but this is my first miscarriage so I don't know. It's bright red...is that normal? My doc did an exam/ultrasound today and the bleeding is so much worse after. The pain is like being in labor. The doctor gave me that pill that's supposed to help open your cervix but I didn't take it yet. I would have to pump milk as she said not to breastfeed for 24 hours after taking it. I have such a hard time getting anything when I pump but DS won't drink formula. Maybe I don't even need it if there is this much blood already? Sorry I'm babbling. This has been the worst day.

Re: How much blood is too much?

  • Too much blood is more than one pad per hour.  And not the 'thin' pads, the thick ones ( I made that mistake, embarrassing!).  You might not have to take the pill, but I would check with your doctors office to be sure.

  • What the pp said.  If you are bleeding that heavily, then it is unlikely that you will really need to take the pill, but you should always check with your doctor first.

  • I asked a similar question last week. I had a natural m/c and the bleeding was very, very heavy. For 2+ days, I went through a lg. pad per hour. I literally slept with the phone in my had because I was so scared. I called my Dr. several times for reassurance. She assured me that although it was heavy, what I was describing was w/in the "normal" range. I'm so sorry that you're going through this. It's sad and scary and draining. Everyone experiences this differently, I think. Just listen to your body and use the resources you have. Definitely call your Dr. -- that's what he or she is there for. Also, I'm very sorry for your loss.
