My family photographer suggested that I get a Canon Rebel XS as a starter camera. I bought mine as a set from amazon.com for $499. I'm VERY pleased with it.
I was hoping you'd answer glad that's kind of what I was leaning toward, I've been much happier with the one canon I've owned than the two Nikons or Kodak I've had since (two were gifts, one is dh's pocket cam) but it seems a little overwhelming... Do you carry your camera everywhere now? Or do you still have a point n shoot you keep in the purse for quick outings?
My camera goes most "major" places with me. I have a 5mp camera on my Droid (phone) that does a decent job. Compared to my real camera, though, point and shoot styles majorly suck (even my "good" sony). The delay just about KILLS me, as does the lack of control (no, I don't have issues...). Don't get me started on flash...
I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. Get a Canon or a Nikon. I'm partial to Nikon, but one isn't really better than the other. If you have somewhere where you can play with them in person, do so and buy whichever feels more comfortable to you.
I have a Nikon D40 - could not love it more. In fact, I'm in the process of getting external storage because I have so many picture files on the desktop.
If I don't use the D40 out and about then I use the camera on my iphone or the video on my ipod. (Love the video on ipod thing - great quality and it fits in my wallet).

This, exactly! I was all set to buy a Canon, until I went and tried them out. The Nikon just felt better in my hand. They are both great cameras!
If you have friends or family who are into photography, buy what they buy. My friend got a Nikon and then dropped and broke her only lens. So her body was useless until she could get a new lens. In the meantime I (and two of our other friends) could have lent her a lens to use until she replaced hers but we all shoot Canon. Being able to borrow/swap/trade gear is lots of fun! Plus cheap hand-me-downs are great!
If you plan to eventually upgrade I recommend getting a camera that uses the same memory card as the pro camera you'd eventually like to upgrade to, then you aren't double investing in cards. For instance, my 5Ds use CompactFlash cards, so does my XTi (which is my "fun" camera). But the XSi uses a different card. So if you started with an XS/XSi and then later upgraded to the 5D you'd have to buy all new cards. Which can get VERY expensive!
I bought most of my gear second hand from more experienced photogs for great prices and saved a lot of money. Look around on photography boards or check Craigslist for used gear. Just be sure you can test it out first! If you do buy new, I'd recommend skipping the kit lens that comes with most cameras since most kind of suck. Do some lens research and maybe spend a little more to get something you can really grow with!
