DD will not take a bottle, she would start and when she tasted the milk she would stop and get really upset. I found out that I have too much lipase an enzyme in the milk that helps with fat digestion.
When there is too much and milk is stored it gives it a funny nasty taste. So all the milk that is in the freezer is no good.
I want to cry!
Re: I have to dump over 100oz of pumped BM:(
look on kelly mom first...I *think* there's a way to salvage milk with that problem. But, it may not apply to already frozen milk...but it's worth a look!
What I read is the only way to fix it is before you store it, after it is stored it is too late. If I could fix it I would. I even tasted it to make sure it did really taste nasty and it wasn't just my baby not wanting to take the bottle.
It was really nasty I wanted to puke. I fill so bad that we were trying to feed this to DD.I had the SAME thing happen to me!!
I feel your pain!! I, though, didn't have near as much as you
This! You might still be able to save it!
I read it has to be done before you store it
I have this much because at one point I was making too much milk so I would have to pump to feel comfortable.
I'm SO SORRY!
Had she ever taken milk that you had pumped and refrigerated?
I was tossing around the idea that this might be our problem for awhile (I'm still not convinced that it isn't) and asked a local APish group about it and one of the moms said that she actually salvaged it after the fact by scalding it. I know kellymom says you can't but supposedly this woman did. I'll try to see if I can find exactly what she did but I'm pretty sure it was just scalding it like you're supposed to beforehand.
before you do this, see if you can donate locally. We had the same issue with my son and my milk. Another mom's baby took it just fine.
check out www.milkshare.com it certainly can't hurt to try one bottle before you dump it all.
I agree. I always thought my milk tasted funny after being frozen, but DS drank it like no one's business so some babies are definitely less picky than others.
Here was the response that I got when I asked about it:
> A friend of mine had this with one child, but not the other. When she had
> this, she heated her fresh pumped milk to 180 degrees and then chilled it
> before freezing it. She said that some of her already stored milk
> she melted in a saucepan and brought that to 180 degrees, and then made
> bottles for the next day at the babysitters house.
It's certainly worth a shot. Worse case scenario it doesn't work and you've wasted 20 minutes or so.
That sucks so much
I would try scalding it just to see. Can't hurt at this point!
Ouch =(
Check kellymom.com to see if there's anything you can do. I thought I read something about scalding it.
Tales of the Wife
Really early on she would take milk that I had pumped but now not at all. I tried pumping right before a feeding and leaving the house. I also tried scalding what I just pumped maybe I need to try again. I think it will be a while before we can get her to take it again because I think she thinks only bad milk comes from the bottle. DH says that now she starts to fuss when she sees the bottle. We have even tried formula, I know it will taste different but at least I know it isn't bad.
I think I'm just going to try a sippy cup now but I don't know if I should use formula or BM that I pump fresh and scald.
Fresh pumped milk is perfectly fine, it's the storing of it that makes it go funky. I would probably try pumping some fresh and giving it to her in a bottle so she gets used to good milk coming from the bottle. You can try dribbling some in with a syringe while she's taking the bottle too so that even if she's refusing to suck, she'll get a taste of the milk which can then prompt her to try for more. Then if you want to store it at that point, just make sure to scald it first.
Did you see my post above about someone being able to save their frozen milk?
Yes I did thanks. So it is ok to just put it right in the pot? The things I read on kelly mom I wasn't too sure so I put the milk in a glass bottle and put the in a pot of water until is was steaming I didn't have a thermometer I could use. I have a meat one and it is clean but I didn't want to put a used meat thermometer in the milk my baby is going to drink. The fresh pumped milk I had sat for a little while in the fridge because DD wasn't hungry yet. So I'm not sure if it was long enough for it to get bad or if she just thinks bad milk comes from a bottle.
Thanks again for the info.
ahah, Moo, I was just going to suggest this!!
fresh BM can be at room temp for 4-8 hours, so just leave the bottle out if she won't take it right away. It won't get the lipase issue until it's been stored.
Although, if the milk was in the fridge for just a short time... I don't think the taste would have had time to change. If she wasn't taking that it could be she just doesn't like the bottle and have nothing to do with the milk.
