My doctor is starting my internal exams tomorrow. I know most start at 36 weeks but my doctor said 37...not sure why. I've heard they're pretty painful. What should I expect? I guess however it is, it won't compare to pushing a giant head out.
I had one last week and was all geared up for some big painful thing and it turned out to be no big deal. Sure there was pressure and some discomfort, but only for a few moments, then it was over.
Good to know! I always just figured it would be kind of like a pap but then recently I've been hearing its super painful. Glad it hasn't been bad for you girls!
I have declined all of mine so far but I have heard varying reports. Some people say that they are really uncomfortable and some say that it was no big deal.

You can decline them? Aren't they necessary?
Nope, not necessary. A lot of OBs/MWs don't do them at all, because they really tell you nothing. A woman can walk around dialated for weeks and not go into labor, or be all closed up one minute and in full blown labor the next.
The only time I think they are necessary is if you are overdue, thinking about being induced (to see how favorable you are for induction), or at risk for preterm labor, etc.
With my last pregnancy I thought they hurt. It wasn't like unbearable though. It's more than discomfort (atleast for me) but they aren't horrible. I get my first this Thursday

Gotcha. I guess they don't really do much. Your body will do what it wants. I am most likely going to be induced and have a lot of extra amn. fluid so he said I can be at risk for pre-term labor.
I've had two and I thought they were pretty painful. Similar to a pap, but a more intense pinchy feeling. Not unbearable of course, but very uncomfortable.

mine normally start at 37 as well, but they did one last week b/c i said i was feeling pressure. felt no different to me than when they check you during your yearly exam. the pap is worse, imo. but ask me again as the weeks progress!
also, the mw explained that the reason they do it is so that if you are say 2 cm and a few days later go to L&D and are still 2 cm, they (and you) know nothing has really progressed. but if you are 2cm and go to L&D a few days later and are 4cm, they know you're progressing. i'm probably not explaining it well, but it made sense to me at the time.

I agree. I thought it was going to hurt so bad and it wasn't too bad. I didn't spot at all after.
