I can't quite remember what all the different types are, but we had an assortment and that worked well because different types worked better for different purposes. We has some that were really heavy-duty and thick and I used those to put under DDs head in the crib (pre-ultimate crib sheets). The thicker ones are great for putting on your shoulder to burp while the guaze ones (not prefolds?) are good for wiping mouths, noses, and using as loveys.

Re: flatfold or birdseye cloth diper for burp cloths
We use birdesye. They are a little thicker in the center. The flatfolds will work fine, but they are thinner.
