Fear of the faucet?

Ds is suddenly afraid of the bathtub faucet. It makes getting a bath very difficult. He will start crying before I even get 3 inches of water in. He used to be afraid of the drain but got over that. The water comes out pretty forcefully and loud, but there is only one faucet so I can't make it come out slower without it being icecold. Anyone have suggestions or dealt with this? It does seem like he has more "fears" in general, so maybe it's just the age? (3 1/2)

Re: Fear of the faucet?

  • Did he hit his head on it recently or come in contact with water that's too hot?  IDK.  Maybe you can buy a cover to put over it to change it up for him.

  • Could you fill the tub without him in the tub/bathroom?  If he's just afraid of the faucet in general, not just when it's turned on then maybe get one of those faucet covers (they have different animals/things) to put on after you fill the tub, before he gets in.

  • Can you fill up the tub while he is not in the room? Also maybe try adding a spout cover to 'soften' it up a bit.

  • He's only afraid when the water is coming out. I don't think he hit his head (unless gma or dh didn't tell me but I'm sure they would). I have thought about filling it without him in the room but ::sigh:: that really is a pita. I tried to encourage him to stay in his room while I fill the tub but he was crying and saying No and pulling me away from the tub. I will have to go fill it before telling him it's bath time, then go downstairs and get him and bring him upstairs to give him a bath. Not a hugh deal, but dh is oot this week and I'm 30 weeks preg, so this sounds exhausting, lol.

  • I would try buying one of those animal head covers.  We've always had one on the faucet and it's never been an issue.
