3rd Trimester

She's either checking on me, or trying to annoy me into labor

My mother suspects (correctly) that I won't be letting anyone know when I am in labor until our LO is born (between her and my MIL, I'd have to disconnect my cell phone to avoid being annoyed in labor).

So this morning I get a text from my mother: "Good morning.  How are you feeling (ugh, never thought I would hate three words quite so much)?  would you be interested in spending a long weekend in florida in july?"

Is it just me - it very well could be that I'm being overprotective - or wouldn't you think a four month old baby, driving 7-8 hours to Orlando, in July, just might melt or at least be highly uncomfortable?  Heck, I don't like being outdoors in July... and we're two states north.  I tell her this, and she says, "Well, he'd be fine in a shaded carriage."

Kinda makes me wonder what I was subjected to when I was an infant, LOL.

  • Leah, do you think a baby could tolerate Florida heat and humidity?  I mean yeah I know people do live and have kids there, but this would be at a timeshare resort, which means being outdoors a lot of the day.  The place is gorgeous, don't get me wrong, maybe babies are more resilient than I think they are?

  • I was born in Puerto Rico and spent much of my time as an infant outdoors.  Florida has nothing on Puerto Rico summers.

lol, I really am a lightweight when it comes to heat and humidity.  To me, NYC summers were annoyingly hot, and I swear I do not hang outside my house in SC from June till October, unless it's late at night - even then its so humid.

I told her I would think about it - who even knows what my vacation will be at that point, not to mention DH's.  Plus, I'm sure that would be drama, since DH's family invited us to the NJ shore in August and we already declined (granted, that is a plane trip, and it's the NJ shore...)

  • I would go, for sure!  I traveled across country to Texas when DD was about that age and it was a very easy trip!  She slept the majority of the time in the car.  It was July in Texas, so stupid hot, but all indoor places were air conditioned and she also loved the pool!

  • You DO know that women have babies all over the world in hoter places than Orlando, right?

  • I would go. My dad always says "Newborn babies are easily portable. Older babies... not so much". I'd take the opportunity for a trip like that when I knew the baby would sleep for most of the drive. Just make sure when you're in the heat that you don't have too many layers on him/her and keep them shaded as much as possible.

  • I'd go! By 4 months you should be on some semblance of a schedule and the chance to get away and relax as a family would be great!

I was born in South Florida so the heat of Orlando really wouldn't phase me.

  • I'd go! :)  I live in Orlando.  Yes, the summers are hot, but the humidity is not as bad as some other places out there.  Dress have your LO dressed in lots of clothing and you can definitely find lots of shade if needed. :)
  • We're going to Hyannis to visit DH's grandmother in late June or mid August (DH is a teacher and only gets a week off in June & August b/c of summer school) and we're planning on driving down I think from CT, its about 26 hours but we're doing it in two days b/c of the baby.
  • I have a plane trip planned to SC when LO will be 3 months to attend a family reunion.  I think your being a little over protective or you just don't want to go which is fine.

    Confused

Obviously Confused  My mother is generally known to be BSC around here, and even for florida "natives" I doubt they recommend traipsing around Disney for 14 hours a day in the humidity.  I almost passed out at the age of 21 when I went there with my mother, because she refuses to stay indoors or even take a break.  And just because some people can take the Florida heat/humidity just fine, obviously some people can't.  There's a reason that "snowbirds" exist... because July is hardly the best time of year to visit.

  • i live about an hour and a half from orlando.  yes, it gets hot and humid, but everywhere in florida is very air conditioned (so definitely bring a blanket for LO).  i don't know that i, personally would walk around disney for 14 hrs when lo is 4 months old, but if you do, you can take intermittent breaks by ducking into the gift shops, shows and restaurants.  just think about if this issue is really the heat factor, or is your mom just irritating you?

  • I think it's just you...People live in Florida, especially women and children...some are actually born in Florida and in the month of July. There is air conditioning, shade and water!

July is smack in the middle of vacation time and tons of people leave their homes to go outside and be in the Sun!

I plan to go visit my friend and her baby in Florida 6 weeks PP with the LO. I am not worried about it one bit.

Yes, but to be spending 14+ hours a day outside in a Disney theme park for days on end?  I wouldn't mind if I was visiting someone at their house, at least I'd be indoors most of the day...

It's definitely both.  It doesn't help that she pretty much wants me to bring my little brothers on all the upsidedown coasters while she takes LO - so I'd be babysitting her bratty kids, while she conveniently loses herself elsewhere in the park... but I also really don't do well in the heat, so I have a hard time picturing an infant faring better than me.

  • i say if it doesn't sound like a good time to you then don't go.  maybe suggest a cabin in tennessee instead and see what she says!  or tell her 'maybe next year'.
