if you could pick anything as a lovey...

what would you pick? a little blanket? a soft animal/doll?

DD has a little square taggie blanket that i've tried a bit to introduce as a lovey, but so far, no love. i'm trying to decide if i should keep trying or move on to another item. i'd like to help her sleep better at DCP, and i'm hoping a lovey would help.

  • DD#1 was a corduroy frog with these skinny legs and arms that her tiny fingers could get around.  Very cuts, but had to handwash...

DS has opted for a wooden teething rooster and I find that weird and not a cozy type of thing, but it makes me happy b/c it's easy to wash.

  • I've ordered DD the Under the Nile Bunny Blanket.  It's organic cotton and has little knots for teething.  If she likes it, I'll order another one that is identical so that one is always clean.  I like this because it's a combination of a little blanket and a stuffed animal.  It should be easy for her to hold.

I think I read in NCSS that you should try putting the lovie between you and your LO when you are feeding her/him.  That way they'll begin to associate its scent with eating.  Also you should sleep with you a few nights and maybe carry it around with you in your shirt so that it starts to smell like you.

This!!!  We had a lovey my mom bought M and he never took to it.  When we were on vacation we picked up this cute moose lovey in a gift shop.  I joked we should get another one but since they were gift shop pricey we just picked up one.  Turns out M totally loves it (he likes to chew on the antlers) and I can't find them online unless I want to order an entire gross.  I just sent an email to the gift shop manager to see if she'll ship us two :-)

I read somewhere about the idea of getting your LO to use a cloth diaper/burp rag.  This would have been brilliant as we have plenty.

  • My son got this at his baby shower and I got him another one so we have two as he likes to sleep with it under his head (because it is so soft I think): https://www.angeldear.net/cuddle/1100_ducky_c.php

  • I've been trying to get her to snuggle her Under the Nile doll, but no go. She does love to hold it by the hat and use it to whip me though so I guess that's a start. I've tried other dolls, a little horse blankie, a mini pillow. She just wants to rest her hand on my breast. I'm thinking I should buy a fake set.

early on, it looked like she was going to adopt one of these. i was so excited, but that passed. maybe i'll try again if the taggie continues to fail.

there's a definite plus to having more than 1. i remember reading a post somewhere on the bump ages ago: a mama washed her LO's lovey in their front loading washer, and poor kiddo stood at the door to the washer watching and whimpering the entire wash cycle :(

  • burp cloth would be heavenly.

    my second choice:

  • Marion chose (on her own, after we tried a taggie blanket and one of those odd stuffed head on a blanket animals) this wonderful Jellycat doggie.  She loved it almost to death but luckily my MIL was able to get another one for this Christmas.

  • Becca has become attached to a little stuffed mouse from Ikea.  She luuuuurves it! We bought 4 more since they cost 75 cents each.
  • DD will take any soft blanket.  It's pretty awesome.  We started her off by swaddling her in soft blankets when she was really little and we always brought a blanket with us when we went out since she was born in the winter.  I guess it was just always there.

  • Both Charlotte and Cooper chose their own.  Grandma sent Cooper a Laugh and Learn Puppy for his birthday last year and Charlotte stole it as her lovey.

In efforts to get Cooper to take a lovey at 15 months old, I went to Target and offered him every item that remotely resembled a lovey in the baby section.  He chose this pink hippo (which I then wore in my bra for a few days to get my smell on it).

I tried and tried to get DS to take a plain ol' Gerber cloth diaper (we used them for burp cloths too), and it looked promising for awhile.  It just took him forever to finally decide on his lovey, which ended up being a stuffed monkey, and he didn't choose it until he was about 3-4mos shy of his 2nd bday.  But, if I could get him to choose ANYTHING, it would be the cheapie cloth diaper b/c they are super cheap, abundant, and they all look the same.

haha, I was just thinking I would be thrilled with DD taking up any lovey besides my boob! Someone needs to invent a realistic breast lovey... hmmm.

Do we have the same child?

  • I don't think you can pick your child's lovey.

DD got two of those animal-head loveys from Angel Dear (two pink giraffee ones) because her cousins all love them and used them as loveys.  She hates them.  They are soft, but she will chew the head and then throw it on the ground.  I have been trying to give it to her while nursing so she associates it with comfort/security to no avail - she will fling it across the room.

She sort of has picked a homemade very soft, wide-knit afghan as her lovely - she needs it to sleep but doesn't want it outside of her crib.  She will pull it through the bars if she is playing in her room and tired.  My mom has made some crocheted squares in the same yarn so she can have "travel loveys."  She hasn't connected them yet.

When I was little, my lovey was a silk-bordered waffle-weave receiving blanket.  My mom bought a second and cut into fours for "travel loveys" and it was brilliant - always one at the ready when one was in the wash or lost.  I hope the smaller lovely my mom has made (like 4 squares together) will catch on with DD.

  • DS has 2 - one for the car, and one for home.

Car lovey is a stuffed camel called Two Hump.

Home lovey is a beanie baby dragon. It's actually really convenient for use as a lovey. His wings are that kind of material that crinkles when you squeeze it, his tail is curled and perfect for tiny hands to hold, and his little ears and tongue are good for pinching and rubbing, which DS LOVES to do.

DH had a ton of stuffed animals before we were together, so I basically just laid them all out and let him pick the ones he liked best.

  • Both of my kids have AngelDear lovies. They are a little blanket with an animal head. Jack has a frog for school and a giraffe for home. Jett has a tiger, although, he hasn't used it yet.
