1st Trimester

Diet Drinks???

So are diet drinks okay or not? I've heard of people avoiding them like the plague, and I've heard other people recommend Crystal Light as a way to drink more water.

My dietician (I used to be obese) always said not to drink your calories, unless it's milk. So I don't drink regular pop, or even juice. There are times though, usually at restaurants, that I'd love to have a Diet Pepsi or Coke Zero. I usually just have water, b/c I've been worried about the sweeteners.

So what does 1st Tri think? Are artificial sweeteners the devil, or is it another case of "everything in moderation"?

Re: Diet Drinks???

  • My OB says 2 servings per day of artificial sweeteners. I'm still trying to stay away altogether. Although, DH just bought some beverages at Costco, the Kirkland brand of Vitamin water and I noticed it has sucralose. Not sure if I'm going to drink them or not ...

  • OB told me 'one fun drink a day'. he said a diet coke a day would be fine. i am staying away for the most part, but when i do have one it's heaven!

  • I've been avoiding artificial sweeteners, but I didn't drink them much in the first place.  I think one every once in a while would be fine.

  • I avoid them as much as possible during 1st trimester. I'm a little more lax with it after that though.

  • Thanks, I just did some more reading online and apparently the FDA says that Aspartame and Acesulfame Potassium are "safe in moderation" in pregnancy, and that Sucralose (Splenda) is "safe". Just wondering what everyone is personally doing.

    Yep, I read that too.

  • I used to drink only diet soda and gave up my daily drinks a little over 2 years ago due to the artificial sweeteners and what they can do to your body. I switched to regular soda at the time and actually LOST weight (no other lifestyle changes) and I feel incredibly better. Diet drinks often make you crave more carbs/sugars so they often don't help you "diet" as you're more likely to want to eat other filling, high calorie foods too.

  • I try to avoid them, pregnant or not. if i have a rare craving for a soda I reach for a natural soda when available.Dh and I try to eat natural/organic/as unprocessed as possible.

but it is about moderation. one or two here and there. I've been known to chug down a few gulps of my mom's diet coke when the mood strikes.

  • Pre pg I used to drink a lot of Diet Coke and Diet Dr. Pepper. I gave it up because artificial sweetner isn't really good for you anyways. If I am craving a pop I will just have a regular coke every once in awhile.

  • Every once and awhile is okay, but make sure that that's the only serving of artificial sweetner you're getting. It can be in a ton of stuff if you're not paying attention.

  • I have a sick, sick love for Diet Coke and Diet Dr. Pepper, but I would only drink them once in awhile before getting pg anyway. Now I don't drink them except very rarely, and will for the rest of this pregnancy. Though I do drink coffee - but I think artificial/lab-created foodstuffs are a lot worse for you (and moreso if you're pg).

  • I drank a ton of diet sodas before my BFP, I've cut it out completely since and plan to keep it that way. I'm sure I'll get the urge at some point to have one, and if I really want it I will have it, but I try to eat as unprocessed/natural/organic as possible in every other aspect of my diet, so I figured this was just another step.
  • All things in moderation.
