What are your favorite infant toys? Also Jumperoo & Exersaucer Question

I added a few, per friends' recommendations, to the registry.  What are your favorite infant toys?  Also, do you need both a Jumperoo and Exersaucer?  I was thinking yes, just to give her a variety of things to play in and both have different features.  But a friend of mine suggested just getting the jumperoo.  I've gotten the Exersaucer already, but the Jumperoo still hasn't been purchased.

Re: What are your favorite infant toys? Also Jumperoo & Exersaucer Question

  • We bought the jumperoo before she was born b/c I thought it looked fun.  Dumb reason I know.  Then found out @ daycare that she liked the exersaucer better.  If she is going to daycare, I would suggest not opening the exersaucer until you see which one she likes better.  I must add that my baby is very short and that was the problem with the jumperoo.

  • How old are they once they're ready for the Exersaucer and Jumperoo?  I'm going to be staying at home, so no daycare.  I guess it's just trial and error.  Maybe I can take her to a friends' house and try out their stuff to see what she likes first, lol.
  • We had the jumperoo at home and that was fine for us- altho next time I will probably invest in an exersaucer for upstairs just b/c the jumperoo was too big to haul up and down the stairs.  He had an exersaucer at my mom's and loved it too.  But not all babies like both so if you're buying it yourself rather than receiving as a gift, I'd say wait a while and try to test 1 or both out before purchasing.

As for infant toys, a lot of people swear by their play mats.  Gavin hated his.  Go figure.  He just hated tummy time so that was not going to work for him.

Did you get a mobile?  Seriously, great investment.  And the rainforest crib soother... I think Gavin will attach it to his bed in college.

Someone gave us a big box of Sassy Infant Toys.  Lots of teethers, rattles, soft toys.  This was really a great gift.  Those little teether things are EXPENSIVE.  Like $5 each- this box had about 20 different toys in it and pretty much lasted through all of his teeth!

  • We have the FP Ocean Wonders crib toy - I actually found it on super sale at Sears MONTHS ago and bought it. It was the first thing I bought :o)  I have a mobile...I'm not thrilled with it.  It's a Clemson mobile that some friends gave us (they used it for their baby).  This is going to sound dumb, but I don't like that it doesn't match her nursery!  I've been looking at the Tiny Love mobiles...they look very stimulating.  I've added and taken off so many mobiles from the registry.  I just can't find one I love.  Which do you recommend?

We registered for a play mat as well, but haven't gotten it yet.  I got a good many Sassy rattles and teethers at the last shower.  I also just checked the registry (I'm a habitual stalker) and someone got us these toys which I am excited about!

Oh yeah, the Seahorse is awesome.  That's our travel soother.  Gavin loves it as much as the rainforest soother.  Is the Ocean Wonders one the one with the remote?  Because that's the one I'll be getting next time.  Those first few months when he couldn't turn it on himself would have been so much easier if I could have stayed out of the room!

As for mobiles, I don't think it matters personally.  Gavin's matched his bedding- boats- and he loved it.

  • Yes I have heard so many great things about the Seahorse!  It reminds me of my glow worm, lol.  This is the soother we have - I don't think it has a remote.  I looked on BRU and didn't see any with remotes.  That sounds nice though!  Ours is still in the box, so if I can find the remote one maybe I can exchange it.  That would be very handy.

  • we love the baby Einstein jumperoo. She started using it at about 3.5 months.  We put a phone book under it and wedged her in with a towel.  It was great entertainment but she didn't start really jumping in it until a few weeks ago.  We didn't get an excersaucer because the jumperoo seemed like more fun, and we don't really have the space for both.  A bumbo seat is handy as well.  Because you can sit the baby in it and take the baby different places in the house with you as they get too big for a bouncy seat.  The FP seahorse is her favorite soother.  Favorite toys: Sophie the giraffe, linking rings, Teething keys, Jaques the peacock....

I also read to her a lot.  I use Dr. Suess books, Guess how much I love you, good night moon, and a few other random titles.

  • We have the jumperoo but did not get it until he was 12 weeks old. By then he could use it with a blanket pushed down around him and a book under his feet. He will still go in it and loves it

  • When DD was really young she loved her playmat - we had the Fisher Price rainforest one. As she got older the jumperoo became her fave. She was never impressed with the exersaucer at all. It seems to vary from kid to kid from what I've seen.

  • Rainforest jumperoo was BY FAR the greatest baby item we ever owned. I have video of him laughing and squealing so hard he'd make himself gag while jumping. The exersaucer bored him but we used it in our bathroom so he'd have somewhere to go while I showered (after he outgrew the second swing we had in there). My advice would be to buy a new jumperoo and pick up an exersaucer at a consignment sale. There are a bunch this coming weekend (someone posted a link earlier).

He also loved the LeapFrog musical table. Another great item to pickup at consigment if you can.

ETA: He started using the jumperoo around 3.5 or 4 months. We put a flat pillow under his feet so he would touch. The musical talbe was about 6 months - we used it with the legs off then - all the way up to about 12 months with the legs on.

  • Our fave toys:

    Rainforest Bouncy seat

    Baby Einstein Neptune Playmat

Any exersaucer (we have a Sesame Street one that I bought from another mom - it comes apart and turns into a walker when he can stand and push something). E is short so we have a pillow in the bottom so he can reach. We won't be getting a jumperoo, I'm too worried about what it would do to his bone development (you have to be careful how long they are in there). I'd much rather let him roll around on the floor.

Links (great for attaching toys, but also great on their own)

We have a FP mobile that has a remote. It plays heartbeat, music, or nature sounds and has a projector that projects onto the mobile, and when he is too old for that you take the mobile off and it projects onto the ceiling. It in no way goes with his room, but he loves it. We keep the remote right outside his door.

We have a rainforest soother, but he doesn't seem to care about it. I'm thinking of selling it if anyone is interested.

I just got him a crib mirror, should have done that sooner.

The Knot won't share my Bump Siggy, so here's the low-down: 4/27/07 - Got engaged! 8/31/08 - Got married (to my best friend)! 12/30/08 - Got Pregnant! 9/3/09 - Welcome to the world, Elias Solomon! 8/16/10 - Got Pregnant, again! 5/14/11 - Welcome to the world, Talia Hadassah! 1/14/12 - Ready or not, here comes #3 (EDD 9/27/12)
  • Thanks for all the recs!  I just put her Rainforest Bouncy Seat together today :o)  I was DYING to put something together, so I went with that.  I'll leave the bigger stuff for later.  hehe
