Talk to me about Teething Toys

Are all teething toys created equal? We have a storage box filled with gel and hard plastic teethers given as gifts. I'm sure there are some that are better than others as far as toxicity/benefit/etc.

What are the best teethers in your opinion, and what teethers would you never let your LO chew on?

Re: Talk to me about Teething Toys

  • IMO Sophie wins hands down. Not only am I comfortable with the materials and how it is made but LO has actually picked this one out of a box himself and has never looked back. I am not comfortable with the whole BPA thing so I personally steer clear of those since I am sure he is or will be exposed to enough in our daily lives. He also really digs a frozen wash cloth....doesn't get simpler than that!

  • Sophie the Giraffe ROCKS!

second the frozen wash cloth as well.

Ring teethers are just too awkward for DS to get in his mouth!

  • DD loves Sophie but I've read some questions on-line about its safety.  Apparently it was briefly pulled from some stores in Canada because of concerns about choking.  I think the concern is that one of Sophie's legs could get in a LO's throat.  We still use it though.  I just make sure to always be right there with her when DD's got Sophie.

I've also ordered some organic cotton teethers.  I think I'll also buy some of the hard ones from Green Sprouts (not sure what they're made of though - just know it's supposed to be safe) so that she'll have both soft and hard teethers.

  • Sophie.  Hands down.

I've never been able to get her interested in frozen washcloths.

  • DS likes an ice cube in the mesh feeder and this teether:

Another frozen wash cloth fan here. I roll them up in a long tube shape, wet and stick in the freezer.
  • We used sophie when DS was younger. Also, the mesh feeder and I would put frozen apple slices inside.

Now DS just laughs at sophie!  My sister gave me this thing that they use with autistic children for sensory issues.  It has a long end and then a loop at the other end.  DS likes this for now and it seems to fit perfect towards the back of his mouth, so he can put pressure on the molars!

  • We used Sophie and also some Selecta wooden teethers.  DS also liked the Razberry teether but he didn't use it until he was older.

  • We have some BPA free, distilled water filled teethers.  M hates them.  He'll teeth on any/all of his toys.  He also likes celery sticks, frozen waffles/bagles and wet washcloths.

I don't place a whole lot more emphasis on the materials his teethers are made of than any of his other toys.  To him they're all one in the same right now.

  • The ones with gel in them freak me out a little. Not that we're there, yet.

I have this for him - I'm hoping it'll be his lovey as well:image

I've seen tutorials to make them online, but this one I got as a shower gift.

  • DD hated most everything we got her except the Sophie and she still likes it.

Washcloths were a fail, Razzberry a fail, mesh feeder a fail, those weird things you stick in the fridge or freezer a fail.  DD would chew on everything and she got over it by chewing on her blanket, her books, etc.

  • DS just got his Sophie this weekend and he LOVES it.  I am so glad we got one.  I also ordered a Nile carrot teether and a raspberry teether... but Sophie wins for sure.  DS also just likes to chew on the edge of his blankets at times.  So Sophie and blankets.  That's probably all we really need.
