DS is 4 & will not stay still long enough for me to take a pretty large splinter out of his hand. DH is on a business trip, so I'm all alone here with the kids. I've tried every bribe in the book, DS has talked to daddy on the phone, talked to granma, I've told him his hand will get very sick if he doesn't let me take it out. I've threatened going to the hospital/doctor. I've tried, but I can't pin him down enough to get him to stop wiggling the hand or grabbing it with his other hand. We were both in tears. Now he's napping & I'm having a glass of wine (and whine --- waaaahh, why does this always happen when DH is away -- did I mention that DS also locked the bathroom door from the inside, then closed the door & now we can't gat back in??)
Sooooo, back to my original question.... will the splinter work its way out or do I really need to get it out? If it has to come out, then what do I do?? It seems ridiculous (and like I'm a failure as a mother) if I have to take him to the doctor to get a flipping splinter out.
Any who do I call to get into a bathroom? I've tried the skeleton key & that's not working. I've also tried taking the doorknob off & that's not workimg either.
Re: Will a splinter "work" its way out of a hand??
Not sure about your door issue; we have little keys on the tops of all the doors in our house.
But, yes, a splinter will work its way out. You can just put vaseline on it to help it along if he refuses to sit still.
A tip I use: put Orajel on the splinter and wound and then when you pull it out, the area will be numb and he won't feel it.
Or, just sit on him and do it.
Me with my littlest.
Thanks!!! See, wine (or winery) does make everything better :-)
Oh thank god the bathroom he locked is not our only bathroom. I'd be kicking in the door!
Take the hinges off the bathroom door.
Or poke anything ling and striaght, like a paperclip in the hole.
A long bath can help the splinter work out.
The hinges are on the inside of the bathroom & the damn doorknob is so wide it blocks the hole so that I can't get anything in there straight. UGGGGHHH.
The urgent care doctor I worked for would always say that a wooden splinter is the worse type to get because it can cause infection very quickly if it is not taken out. Oragel is a great idea. In the other hand let him eat a lollipop. Get a neighbor, grandma, etc. to help entertain him and put his arm kind of under your arm and then work on the splinter. If you can't get it out I'd take him to urgent care...but they will basically do the same thing (without the Oragel and YOU will be the one holding him). GL
