NBR-anyone have Verizon Fios, because Cablevision blows

Once again, Cablevision is having a dispute with a network, which leaves it's customers without certain channels. THIS time, we're without ABC. THE HORROR!! I have to wait until WEDNESDAY to watch LOST, which is bad enough, but 80% of what we watch is on ABC. So now we're stuck waiting for them to work out the dispute so we can get our channels back.

I'm still thinking we might switch, if for no other reason than to save some $$. FIOS is giving a better price BUT you need to sign a  2 year agreement and I'm afraid of doing that--what if the service stinks?

Anyone (particularly in the Tri-State area) have Verizon FIOS? Do you like it? Any problems??

TIA.

  • I don't (b/c we now live in AR and have shitty Comcast), but I'm from LI and just want to say that that really blows.  Most of my FB page this morning has been people complaining about Cablevision and what's going on.

    Good luck!

  • I live in FL and have FIOS.  Although I am happy with the television, internet, and phone that we receive, Verizon's customer service sucks big time.  Our bill is never correct, they keep adding channels and then charging us for them (like playboy, playgirl, and all the movie channels), and getting them out here to do something, whether it be the initial hook-up or fixing something, is darn near impossible.  At this point (I think), with cable companies, it's "pick your poison."
  • One thing we didn't know when we got Verizon FiOs was that you HAVE to use a cable box to be able to watch TV.  So for every TV in your house, tack on a minimum of $4/month to your bill.  It adds up pretty quickly!  Before we switched, we could plug the TV right into the coaxial cable and watch regular cable (just no premium stuff) and it was great.  Now you can't even get ABC, NBC, etc without a box.  It sucks.

  • I don't have experience with Fios but is it Verizon or Fairpoint?  Fairpoint took over Verizon where I live.  We had our phone and internet through them.  There customer service was horrendous!! It was a couple years ago and it still pisses me off when I think about all we went through with them.  After only 2 months we switched to Comcast.

  • We have Verizon FIOS and it has been the best provider we have had so far. I have had Comcast (not impressed), Charter (the worst), and TimeWarner (shoddy service). We haven't had any real problems at all with Verizon FIOS. Our house was struck by lightning late on a Friday night, which made our cable/internet go out as well as our AC, and Verizon had a technician come out around noon on Saturday to fix it. Now, getting our air conditioning restored was another battle. Unlike the other Florida poster, we have never had an issue with them adding channels and then charging them for us. They did add HBO for a 6 month trial for us, but I don't remember having to call and tell them to take it off.... even if I would have to, that is not a big deal to me. Most places that give you a trial run will automatically start charging you if you are still using it past the trial run.

Overall, we have been very satisfied customers with Verizon. They are a service provider which to me means that there will always be something that could do better.  In the grand scheme of things, though, I call them a winner. Oh, I cannot comment on their phone service since I do not have it.
