Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Those who were induced...

I am getting induced tomorrow and have no clue what to expect. I know they pump me with meds, but how soon to contractions start, how long were you in labor, how soon can you get an epi:) I know everyone's story is different, but any insight into what I'm going to go through tomorrow would be great. Thanks and I look forward to joining you all this week!!!

ETA: At my appt last Monday I was only 1 cm dilated, 70% effaced, and at -1 station. I've been cramping on and off all day for the past 2 days, so hopefully I've had some more progress by tomorrow.

Re: Those who were induced...

  • I know everyone's experience is different, but mine was great! I was induced around 9:30. The contractions were not bad at all for a long time. I do have a high pain tolerance though. They broke my water around 2. Around 3 my contractions got really really strong and painful so I got an epi. Best thing ever! I moved really fast and had DS at 7:45. Good luck to you!

  • Congrats! I loved LOVED loved my induction. Got there at 6pm Tuesday, already 3cm dilated. Had a small dose of pitocin at 7pm. Felt a bit of cramping but not much. They didn't wanna do anything until the AM so I could get some 'sleep'. They gave me ambien, it made me seem high on drugs & I only slept 1 1/2 hours lol but whatever, I was anxious! At 6am, they upped my pitocin, then kept upping it every 20 minutes. I started having contractions that felt pretty good and strong! Still 3cm, they broke my water at 8am. Had so much intense pain, finally got the epi around 930. Then I was at a 5. Took a 2 hour nap, woke up, told my Mom to get the OB cuz I had to push. I was at a 10 by noon & started pushing at 105. At 1:28pm I had my little boy!!

So from first PAINFUL contraction after water being broken till first push, 5 hours! And that included a 2 hour nap! I pray yours goes that well too! You'll do great!

  • I was induced for very low fluid at my 40 wk appt.  I was dialated to ZERO, so they had to insert a balloon catheter to open things up.  I got the catheter and they started me on pitocin at 9pm.  I was given the green light for an epidural whenever I wanted one.  I got it at 2:30 am (after waiting for an hour and a half).  Before the epidural, the best way i could describe the contractions is like when you have really bad intestinal distress and you have to BM badly. I kept going to the bathroom, thinking I had to go.  After the epidural, I was stuck in bed, but felt NOTHING! They removed the catheter at 9am and I was dialated to 7cm.  They had to decrease the pitocin, I was contracting so hard.  I was given the OK to push at about 4:00pm and DS was born at 5:39 pm (he was a lot bigger than anyone anticipated and got stuck).

Good luck!  Im sure you'll be fine.  The epidural is a beautiful, beautiful thing!

  • My induction lasted all day. It started at 9 am and I was back and forth to the hospital all day. My water was broken at 11 pm and I got my epidural at Midnight. DD was born at 6:38 pm, the following day.  Everyone is different, I was not dialated at all when the induction was started and I was 3 cm dialated when my water was broken.  My contractions did not start until my water was broken. I had to "suffer" for an hour between when my water was broken and when I got my epidural. Mind you the minute my water was broken I started vomiting, which was not pleasant but not horrible either.  Over all it was a terrific experience and I didn't have to deal with a lot of labour pains.
  • I was induced at 40w 1 d.  I was started at 9am with no contractions on meds.  My contractions were strong by 11am when I decided to get an epi.  Epi was done at my request but my doc said I could have started it at any time.  Not sure if that is routine but i was 2 cm, 70% at the beginning.  By 4pm I was fully dilated.  However my LO still hadn't dropped completely.  I started pushing around 5 and had her close to 8pm.  My only word of advice.  My epi was too strong {I didn't feel anything} which was nice during the day however I had to be taken off of it completely in order to push.  I would just consult with your doctor to ensure you are getting the right amount and not wait till the end. I ended up delivering her with no meds and it was NOT what I would have wanted. HTH!

Here's my induction story... I also left out I had pancakes and sausage for breakfast that morning, because they thought my labor was going to be a long one. They thought wrong!

  • I was induced at 37 weeks for HPB. My induction did not work the first time so they had to start the whole process over the next day- once I started dialating, they broke my water at 2cm then I went from 2cm to fully dialted in 20 minutes- no time for the epidural. Everyone takes to being induced a little differently.
  • Mine was great.  I went in at 9am dilated to 3 cm and was started on IV fluids and pit.  I was having a lot of contractions close together according to the monitor, but I couldn't feel them.  They broke my water at 2:30pm and then once that cushion was gone I could feel the contractions so I asked for my epi.  It was a perfect, wonderful epi.  Around 7:30pm they checked me and I was 10cm and her head was very low.  I started pushing at 8pm and delivered at 11:22pm.  She was turned sideways and it took along time to push her out while the doctors took turns trying to rotate her so I wouldn't have to have a c/s.  Pushing was exhausting, but pain free.

  • Thanks everyone!! I'm hoping mine goes as smoothly as everyone elses did.
  • I had a great induction, too.  I was induced at 41 weeks, had only dilated to 1 and when he broke my water the doctor couldn't even reach the baby's head well enough to put the monitor in.  He told me then we were in for a long day and told me after she was born that he had expected to have to do a c-section.  The pitocin was started at 8:30 am, water was broken at 9:15 and started feeling contractions at 10.  I had back labor with the pitocin contractions so by 11 a.m. I was asking for the epi and they got started putting it in at noon.  I still felt a lot of pressure after that but not the pain all around my stomach/back I had been feeling so it wasn't that bad.  At 4:00 I was watching Oprah and thinking I'd be there all night and at 5:10 p.m. I was ready to push. I pushed for an hour and my little girl was born.  It wasn't a walk in the park but it wasn't bad at all.  Good luck!

  • I would say go in with an open mind. I was induced at 37 weeks and it failed, so they sent me home. Then I was induced again at 41 weeks, and that also failed, so I had a c-section. I thought that the meds would work, but they just didn't, and I never dilated even a fraction of an inch. Turns out J's head was at such a weird angle that I would of never dilated on my own or with medication, and he was also completely stuck in my pelvid (his head came out with a pop!).

So expect the unexpected and stay positive. You will have your baby one way or another!

  • If you want to read a failed induction story you can find my birth story linked in my siggy.  I won't post it here so you're not forced to read it if you don't want to hear failed stories.
  • I went in at 1.5 cm and not effaced at all - at 41 weeks. I started Cytotec at 11 pm to ripen my cervix. I was supposed to start Pitocin at 5 am, but was having contractions without it by 2 am. I was 4 cm when they checked me at 5 am, and they offered me the epi right then. LO was born at 11:23 am, so 12.5 hours after starting the Cytotec and 9.5 after my contractions started.

  • My induction went well despite some heart rate decels due to the cord being wrapped 2x around his neck.  I was a fingertip dilated and 50% effaced when I went in at 8 PM on a sunday.  Cervidil inserted at 9ish, contractions started at midnight (enough to keep me awake all night despite the ambien) and by 2 am they were 2-4 minutes apart lasting a minute or so.  7 am my water broke on its own and 2 hours later the pit was started.  I labored all day (with some nasty back labor, too) and ended up getting nubane and got in the tub around 3ish.  I went from 3 cm to 8 cm in an hour and was in transition and got the epi.  I was 10 cm very shortly thereafter.  Started pushing at 6 and he was born at 6:19.
  • I was just as far along as you were in terms of dialation when I went in for my induction at 42 wks 2 days. Mine took 2 1/2 days but ended in a vaginal birth-thank god. I dont think it would be so bad for you if you get the epi, but i waited til after like 50 hrs or something ridiculous before I had to get it and then had my son in like 4 hours.

Just eat something big before you go bc you will be hungry- esp if it takes a long time. I snacked during my labor in the hospital even though technically they dont want you to. also if you dont progress in one day, see if you can take a break for the night, rest, eat, and try again the next day. It definitely is an option and lets you prepare for more labor. GL you get to meet your baby soon! So exciting.
