Insulin question

So the Glyburide is not really helping...although go figure this weekend my #'s are not that bad but during the week they really spike. I think its b/c I do more running around on the weekends.

Anywho, they are giving me "N" insulin for b-fast and bed time and "R" insulin at dinner. I meet with the dietician next week to go over how to administer it, but the pharmacist said to take the R 1/2 hour before dinner. However the information that came with the drugs said 30-60min BEFORE dinner OR immediately after. After dinner would be much more ideal then figuring out when I eat and minus 1/2 hour from that. ESPECIALLY during the week coming home from work.

Just curious if anyone else is on this type and what do you do. Also if you are, do you take yours out with you if you are not at home? I have a wedding in 3 weeks that starts at 6:30 so I'm sure dinner will be around 8:30 (which is late for me) and I'm wondering how to figure out when to take the insulin. Also, my eating schedule will be off.

GD stinks!

Re: Insulin question

  • I am a type 1 diabetic so I am not sure if it is the same for GD.  When I was on R insulin I would take it a 1/2 hr before so that it was working by the time I started eating.  An hour seems long to me because you have to make sure your blood sugars don't drop too low.  The other reason why I would take it ahead of time is for a more accurate 2hr post blood sugar reading.  Regular insulin leaves your body quickly so you can see if you are on a correct dose with your post meal blood sugars.  GL

  • I just started my insulin on Friday. I take N & R in the AM & R at dinner & N @ bedtime.  My diabetes nurse told me to eat NO MORE THAN 30 minutes from taking my shot.  So I have been eating immediately AFTER taking my shot.  And I make sure to have a snack at bedtime with my shot too.  The N insulin is a slow release insulin that lasts from breakfast thru lunch. The R insulin is a fast acting insulin that will get you from Dinner to bedtime, until you take the N again to get you thru the night.

Definately ask about the wedding dinner issue because I haven't experienced that yet. BUT, my nurse also said to make sure that I eat no less than 2 hrs apart and no more than 5 hrs apart.

even though it's only been 2 days, it's been a great 2 days!!  It's nice to experience good numbers finally.
